I was watching the new last night when they showed a story about the Japanese whaling fleet setting sail and all the flag waving citizens waving them off. One of the ships had RESEARCH painted on the side in big bold letters.
You ain't fooling anyone, asshats!

Well, I care. It's a fucking bad joke. I really like whales, and they're aren't enough of them left to go around eating them.
The Italians actually thought all that stuff in the spermwhales melon was spunk? Bunch of jerks

This is a common misconception, whales are actually total dicks. They always pay less in when you split the tab, they skip the queue to turn by pushing in from the straight lane and they are totally fucking stingy with that precious ambergris.

This is an old story ... Japan is a member of the Whaling Convention, and it always applies for the "research" loophole which allows limited whale catches for scientific research, and it's only the remains that are given up to commercial exploitation (don't want all that research material to go to waste).
But, you see, that loophole is there for Japan on purpose. They'd rather have Japan as a member and at least keep tabs on and regulate its practice than have them happily whaling without restriction. So they cook up this loophole knowing Japan is going to exploit it. Anyway, that's how the politics of it has worked out. It allows Japan to say it's technically "legal" and the int'l community to say it's "blatantly abusing the rules", so that creates a space inside of which the politics can work itself out without the world blowing up. Over time Japan gets pressured within the system, and how far it goes depends on just how much that pressure pinches, how much westerners really care. Some might argue it's shaking hands with the devil, but that's politics.

I don't see how eating Whales is such an issue when we actually are driving cod into extinction(while Whale stocks are pretty healthy for some species). Eat more whale less cod I say.
Gillie on 20/11/2007 at 13:18
I feel the same way about any animal or fish.
No animal should be driven to extinction
Also not the point.
It is completely unnecessary to hunt them.
People make me sick who find it amusing. Humpbacks are very rare and they are hunting them.
Not that many Countries who want their meat anymore.
PigLick on 20/11/2007 at 15:18
the thing is, cod tastes damn good

And whale doesn't. Last I heard they put whale burgers on school cafeteria menus to get rid of the stuff, because it doesn't sell very well.
