Not sure why we've never had a thread about one of the most greatest shows on television; but after last night's near perfect season 3 premiere, I felt it was high time we did.
Anybody here watch it? If so, what are your thoughts?
P.S. For those who haven't seen it yet, this is an ideal time to catch up, since season 2 was also just released on DVD this month.

Except when their doing their job,the men on this show are weak, spineless
urchins,at least that is what I gathered from the one episode I saw.A case in point.A teenage son says that he is banging his teacher having been seduced by her.The father,(the main character), goes to confront her, then she rattles of some questionable behaviour of his own and without saying a word the guy leaves.Huh?

Palo,
You've got it all wrong.
First of all they aren't spineless urchins. That happens to be an oxymoron since urchins (both hedgehogs and the sea variety) are almost all spines! Unless you meant its other definition "playful youngters" which "the men on this show" also cannot actually physically be. OK, so what you gathered from that one episode was inaccurate and requires some extra background information:
First, Leary's character (Tommy) is NOT that kid's father.
He's got a few kids of his own though (and sadly his young son was just recently killed by a drunk driver which has finally driven him back on the bottle, as you saw). That kid's mom is his best friend's (who was also his cousin) widow. That'd be the dead guy whom Leary still sees and talks to a lot. The fact is Tommy's always horny and the teacher was hot and gave him her number. However, to his credit, he did get them to stop seeing each other; at least for now.
No, Tommy's not by any stretch a good role model. The characters on the show aren't your typical heroes- they are flawed just like all human beings are. Yes, that includes being weak in certain ways rather than just the blandly interchangable supermen firefighters are often portrayed as in post 9-11 whitewashed crap like "Ladder 49". There's a reason afterall that the show is titled as such. That kind of subverting of expectations is one of the things that makes it so wonderfully unsentimental, real, hilarious, unexpected and brilliant.

I'm fairly certain that that entire opening sequence was a dream (think that one episode in season two where he's standing outside the liquor store and it goes into this drunken carousing sequence, and then cuts back to him standing outside and he walks away) sequence and Tommy is still dry. He's still going to the AA meetings and certainly seems to be taking them much more seriously than before, and he didn't buy a drink at the smoking bar.
