Rerolling... - by raevol

Because shit. I made it through the thieves guild, mages guild, and almost all of house Hlaalu before I realized that my character would be so much better if I had picked tweaked it a little more.
Old setup:
Major- Light Armor, Short Blade, Marksman, Block, Alchemy
Minor- Enchant, Speechcraft, Mercantile, Athletics, Illusion
I took Alchemy in order to have another skill for the Mages guild and to make crazy awesome potions, but I find myself constantly selling off my potions and ingredients to unburden my character. Also, enchanted items serve me much better than potions because I'm not going crazy stacking fortify intelligence potions. I've realized that to meet my rank requirements I can just use illusion, and then train up enchant and some other skill.
I've also found the Mercantile skill to be useless. When I sell for crazy money I just go to the talking mudcrab or creeper, so there's no real point to it. I'm replacing Alchemy and Mercantile with Security and Sneak, because while enchantments can easily replace those skills, I still found myself carrying around lockpicks, just to save my enchant charges. Security is also an intelligence skill, so it'll synergize with Enchanting. Might look into taking something instead of sneak... like acrobatics. We'll see.
Gear:
I didn't realize how good the Boots of Blinding Speed were until I just got them recently. Circumventing the blinding is super easy, and they would have saved me a lot of misery through the early game. Carrying around mark, recall, intervention, and other amulets also makes the game much more enjoyable (without pissing all over the immersion like the teleportation in Oblivion) and I'll seek those out sooner this time through.
Anyway this has been my self-obsessed rant about my Morrowind reroll. Thanks for reading.

I realised something similar during my first run-though, though I was near the end of the game so I kinda felt obliged to soldier on with it! :p

yea, I've beaten the game before, and I'm seriously just enjoying walking around (as long as it's fast) so starting over was no problem for me.

I cannot tell from what you have shared if you are playing on a console or using the PC version. If the latter, you can open the console, type enableclassmenu and press enter. This will permit you to go through the character generation choices including re-defining your major and minor skills. I do not believe there is anything you can do if you are playing on the X-Box.

:weird: Damn. I am playing the PC version. Just deleted all my saves and rerolled. It's ok though, as I said, I am having serious fun with the game. I'd rather keep my character "pure" anyway.
I decided to use Sneak instead of Acrobatics. I'm levelling acrobatics for the Strength anway. I am using the Unnoficial Morrowind Patch, the Morrowind FPS Optimizer (for resolution/refresh rate and view distance), and all the official mods. Are there any other essential mods/patches I should be using?

Without knowing what you are looking for in your game experience I cannot advise you very well. There are thousands of mods for Morrowind, and hundreds of those would be described as 'essential' by many players.
For convenient one-stop shopping for plug-ins that enhance gameplay I like (
http://www.mwmythicmods.com/realism.htm) Empirical Morrowind. It is sorted by category so you can chose from many mods that alter the game in a particular way. If you are about improved visuals there are more texture replacers than I can name. A general search will generate links for you to follow, or search (
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/) Planet Elder Scrolls, (
http://www.elricm.com/index.htm) Elric or one of the other major hosting sites. Even if they are not into graphics, most players would regard (
http://www.psychodogstudios.net/) Better Bodies essential. There are many fine quest mods if you are looking for additional content. You can search to find lists of such mods or visit large host sites as before. Many of the finest companions are linked from (
http://lovkullen.net/Emma/index.htm) Emma's site.

Hmm, so I don't expect anyone to go searching for particular mods just for me, but I am definitely looking for mods that are the following:
-Not new content
-Enhance gameplay
-Don't add drastic new features
Basically I am just looking for engine fixes/tweaks/improvements or similar, I'm not really aware of what's out there. Like if I could find something that would visually alert me when I am under attack (so I could listen to my own music without fear of being chased across the world by a cliffracer) that would be fantastic.
I would totally go for better bodies and better textures in a heartbeat, but I really don't like the art style. :( I love the Morrowind art style, the poly count and texture size just kinda blows.

I'd advise Better Bodies, the Unofficial Morrowind Patch, the official plugins and the Ring Texture Fix by random name. One I also found simple yet effective was the RealSignposts Plugin for Morrowind by Matthias [ElBundeee] Kath (so you can finally read those signposts).
Depending on your preferences you could install the Soul Gem Replacer (for better soulgem textures), The Epic Soundtrack (so the music is somewhat less repetitive), Alternate Enchanted Item Icons (I like these), Bottle Replacer (quite unnecessary), Delayed Dark Brotherhood Attack (this one makes sure you don't get the very expensive and strong DB armor early on, as well as making the game more realisitc in my opinion), a magicka regeneration mod (self-explanatory) and Kirel's Interior Weather (quite unnecessary). And there are dozens more. I don't have any large world retexture packs installed since I found them to be too high-res or bright.

I too dislike testure replacers that alter the feel of Vvardenfell, but some replacers increase the resolution while preserving the original look.
For gameplay tweaks, (
http://www.mwmythicmods.com/realism.htm) Empirical Morrowind is your most complete source. In particular, (
http://www.mwmythicmods.com/realism.htm#152) Wakim's Game Improvements is practically a patch. It improves NPC AI, balances many aspects of the game and stiffens faction requirements. It is modular so you do not have to use all of the changes it proposes. In addition to the game tweaks at that site, you might want to take a good look at (
http://www.fliggerty.com/phpBB3/downloads.php?sid=96a9e65de055b3aca56db07bac3494c6) Fliggerty's mods. Many (most) of his mods require an external program that adds script functions not available from Bethesda's development. I expect there is a link to MWSE from Great House Fliggerty. With all your new mods you may want a tool to manage them and fix problems that might arise. (
http://wrye.ufrealms.net/) Wrye Mash is the preeminent utility (bottom of page). It requires Python to run, but Wrye will link you to a download for that program.

Cool, I think I'm going to use the real signposts one. Could you recommend a mod to reduce the crazy effect on enchanted items? I see a lot of them, but is there one that anyone has used and recommends?
EDIT: I got the blue dot enchanted items one, it's pretty nice. I also tried real signposts, but it was giving me a dependency error every time I started the game. It looked nice, but I'd rather find one that didn't give that error.
