I've posted on this subject in the Troubleshooting segment of the forums, but no one seems to respond to it, so I'm reposting here.
Anyway here is the issue - Awhile ago I drug out my Ultima Underworld I & II CD and I installed UWI with the xcopy commands and applied Sir Cabirus Dragon's uw2wnt patch which worked great - was able to play the game perfectly under Windows XP Pro.
Until Recently. I removed Ultima Underworld but wanted to play it once again recently - *mostly because I started to play System Shock 2 again~ high definition texture mod brought renewed interest*. I repeated the previous steps as before, but now no matter what I do I recieve the "Out of EMS Memory. Error code 0001". I followed the steps to the letter of the uw2wnt patch by Sir Cabirus Dragon, changing the EMS to 8192 and fullscreen ratio selected. Running with VDMS for sound. It doesn't work anymore.
My computer Specs are as follows:
Windows XP Pro Service Pack 1
1.00 GB Ram
2.60 Pentium 4
Geforce 4 Ti 4600 video card (drivers 44.03)
I don't know why the game is not working, but it would be nice if it did- like it used to.

Well, I settled with using DosBox to run Ultima Underworld, just have to get used to using the emu. Everything seems to run fine, but I'm still curious why it stopped working with the patch by Sir Cabirus.

It works fine on my system, however, the EMS memory requirement under properties was 4096. I don't know why that should make a difference, but perhaps the program won't allow that much EMS.

SB Live 5.1
Geforce 2 TI
XP Home

With his old patch it was 8192, tried the newer patch where it lists 4096 instead of 8192, and it still doesn't work on this computer. Strange thing is I have another computer in the house a Pentium II 700Mhz with 256mb Ram and an old ATI Rage card installed with Windows XP Home after applying the patch and it works. I just don't get it, I haven't really done anything with my main computer (Windows XP Pro Service Pack 1 1.00 GB Ram 2.60 Pentium 4 Geforce 4 Ti 4600 video card) Other than the usual Windows patches, and the video drivers. strange. Well at least I get to enjoy the game some way.

If you're getting an Out of EMS error, it has nothing to do with the patch.
There's something else wrong. I don't know what exactly, as you are setting it to use EMS..
Strange indeed..

Yes strange, I have also exactly the same problem...Impossible to have EMS memory..

Well, I have solved the issue, but through other means. I'm now able to play Uw1 and Uw2 to the end on my main computer. Though I believe I said this before, I have to use the dosbox emu (which can be obtained at (
http://dosbox.zophar.net) ). The config file for the emu settings are as follows (the ones I changed and retuned for my enjoyment of the game): under [cpu] set "cycles=8000" and under [dos] setting for memory I have emssize=8 xmssize=16. The games run perfectly *though at least there will be one stutter every half hour on my computer during gameplay*. It's rather strange using this emu because I had to make a shortcut on my desktop so I could just drag the uw1 or uw2 directories onto it to play them, but it works and that's what really matters in the long run.

Just use VDMSound!!! It make wonders!!! It only works on XP/NTby the way... if you are STILL on Win98... tough luck!!!

When using old, patched games (like ss2 etc) I've sometimes found that they have stopped working after I have run a windows update.. which might hint at the origin of your problems..
these days, MSblast and all, you really want to take some updates tho... unless you're behind a hardware firewall like me.. ;)
zonk, on a temporary visit here from the ss2 forums
