I miss those days. Here's to secretly downloading the Anarchist Cookbook, putting it on an innocuously labeled floppy disk(!) and hiding it from the CIA swat team I expected to be homing in on me for downloading such an edgy piece of fiction.

I remember pirating games when I was like, ten years old, on dial up. It got so bad, that my dad actually ran me a separate phone line (broadband was nowhere near where we were - still isn't actually) so that I could be on and not use up the phone line.
Oh, and that one month we didn't have service, I burned through AOL CDs. Which was really bad, actually, because they had no local numbers. Watching my dad ninja his way out of a $2000 phone bill was probably one of the best experiences of my childhood.
So, yeah. I recall.
Edit: Also, you guys are old. I'm so glad I never had to deal with 300 baud modems and what-what. You poor bastards..

So he dressed up as a Japanese mercenary of espionage and spied on them, until they became uncomfortable and just torn up the bill to get rid of the creepy dude hanging around in the shadows?
You know, in all reality you're lucky to have had a father who was so negligent in the ways of discipline. I would have just killed you and weighted the body down with a couple cinderblocks.
Edit: But that's just the ways of us old guys. We don't fuck around.

I recall we had a reading comprehension test that was run by COMPUTER! that consisted of a preset story delivered via projection/shadowgraph screen with ear pieces like stethescopes and a test after done by pressing BUTTONS! Man we were just like the space program in 5th grade. Unfortunately most of us were punished for our comprehension by not getting to further use the thing.
I also recall it taking a month to download a game already paid for retail because of steam. Oh wait, that was last week.

Dial up in the 90's. Before Thief which I got because I needed to get off online gaming. I was highly addicted to an online WWII flight Sim called Warbirds. At the time they charged $2.00 an hour, my monthly bills were usually in the $400.00 range.
