If I'm using TFix and EP2, which of these packs should I download, and what order should I load them in?
Akven on 30/12/2019 at 16:09
Emmm
1. Install Thief Gold or Thief II
2. Install TFix or T2Fix
3. Install ESRGAN main pack
4. Install ESRGAN TFix pack
5. Install ESRGAN EP1 pack (authentical or non-authentical)
6. Install latest ESRGAN fix
7. Install HQ paintings
(otional) 8. Install ESRGAN video pack in any order
9. Install EP2 and change config for it to load on top of everything

After some testing, it seems that if I turn EP2 on it replaces pretty much all the ESRGAN textures, which is fine for most of them, but in some cases it seems to replace the ESRGAN textures with the really low quality vanilla textures. What I was hoping to do was have as many textures as possible be the new ones from EP2, and fill the gaps with ESRGAN.

I think the only way to deal with it is to unpack EP2.crf, delete all the textures with low quality and pack it back to ZIP without compression (CRF is common ZIP file without any compression)
I searched through EP2.crf and is seems that most of the low quality textures are ingame objects (obj folder).

I'm not sure that's it. I'm playing Thief Gold, and there are very few textures in the obj folder in the Thief 1 folder. And a lot of the textures I am seeing are base game textures that are replaced by ESRGAN if I turn EP2 off in cam_mod.ini. This means that something in the EP2 Thief 1 folder is switching things BACK to their old textures. I have no idea what that might be.

This video by a user over here (gecko) gives a good idea of the level of improvement that these esrgan upscaling techniques have achieved in thief. I believe the Esrgan texture pack is now the definitive way to play the thief games. Also, I am working on compiling a list of object textures from Enhancement Pack 2.0 that are both authentic and have higher resolution than the upscaled object textures and will share the list over here for people who would like to combine hi-res objects with the superior esrgan upscales for the terrain and most other surfaces.
I'm absolutely floored by the Esrgan enhancements. I'd agree, it is the definitive way to play now. Thank you for all the work on it Akven - not sure I could go back now.
Curious Taffer - I'm interested in your work on culling the list of objects that are authentic too, did you make much progress on that? Is this something Akven has indicated he's willing to review for potential inclusion?
Akven - Some feedback.
1) I had some confusion with your instructions and the downloads. You talk about EP1 and Enhancement Pack 2 in your post (here and in the T2 post) and also have some mention of EP1/EP2 in your instructions (ie for the EP1 add-on for example). The problem is, not everyone will know what you're talking about exactly and why you present the downloads you do (especially if they're not up on what EP1 and EP2 is). I'd suggest idiot-proofing it a bit. Ie, it took me reading several pages to find your comment that EP1 is the texture enhancement pack 1...and that it's what is included in TFix & TFix2. Ie, it wasn't immediately clear that I could even use the EP1 add-on download - when I most definitely did want it.
2) Likewise, and it may seem small, but I spent some time checking your ESRGAN video threads and these threads (for T2 also) to figure out where the movies should be extracted to - there wasn't an answer, so I just went to extract it and poke around...and yes, it's as dead simple as putting it into the Movies file...but I'd suggest putting a note (extract & overwrite in the Movies folder) to potentially save some confusion. Might also mention the crop fix.
3) I'd like to suggest a megapack for everything. Many people won't care about all the options necessarily - they just want to grab the best stuff. You've done some amazing work, I think the vast majority of people will want all of it (and would likely trust your opinion on what to include, ie I'd guess the EP1 add-on with authentic, paintings, and the videos). If you wanted to make it more than just ESRGAN stuff, if there's anything else another author has done - I bet people would be good with that being included or you recommending it. I know in the Morrowind community, that it's common for people to do megapacks like that - or at the least have annually updated lists of the better options (ie pastebin for Morrowind) - they're pretty popular.
4) Your base texture pack download is called 1.4 in the thread, but is actually labelled Texture Pack 1.0 in the 7z file you download (this is the case with your T2 base pack download as well). Was a bit confusing - I wondered if the download link was linking to an old file - I ended up assuming it was just a label thing.

I updated info with your feedback for movies and EP1.
As for megapack - if anyone would want to do it - I would be happy))
1.4 overall version = 1.0 base version + 1.4 Fix

I uploaded everything to moddb. If everything is clear now (I merged versions and removed unused packs and wrote short insctuction) - I will delete file on mega and leave them only on moddb.
