When will the admins gonna upgrade the TTLG forums? I you read the announcement, you can see that they will be upgrading the forums soon!
Does that mean that all posts currently in this forum will be deleted?
Will the archives be deleted too?
David on 8/1/2004 at 12:07
All posts and archives will remain. The only thing being deleted are all Private Messages.

Phew! I was worried for a sec. there. Thanks David! BTW, when are you going to do the upgrade?
David on 8/1/2004 at 12:23
We don't know yet. We will be upgrading when vBulletin 3.0.0 Final is released, at the moment Release Candidate 2 has been released, so it might not be long. We shall update you with the date when we know. :)

what's wrong with the current one?
it's really nice already
though, there are some problems with pages stopping loading without a reason
but i thought that'd be a server problem
garretts_shadow on 8/1/2004 at 13:54
Me too, I prefer the current one more. The thing that I'm afraid of that might happen is like in this other forum that I visited : (
http://forums.axn-asia.com) click here
They deleted TONS of posts there because there were lots of bugs and stuff. The other topics were moved to other sections (which is BAD because it has no relation to the section)
If you tried clicking on one of the sections (ex. the C.S.I section) you will see topics about japanese anime (pretty weird)
I hope this problem won't happen here in the TTlg forums when the admins make the upgrade *crosses fingers*

It is likely that once vB3.0.0 is released that updates to vB2.x.x (which we run at the moment) will cease. These may include security updates etc which are very important.
I've been running the vB3 Release Candidates on my own PC for a week or so now and am very happy with them. I've spent a about 5 hours removing the crap from the new version and altering it to the "TTLG Style"
vB3 has some great new features for both end users and admins/moderators.
Before we upgrade the live forums we are likely to run the upgrade procedure on a backup to see what bugs we may face. The vB3 support forums are a buzz of activity at the moment, almost all of it positive.
The board you linked to garretts_shadow is phpBB, a free bulletin board. It is known to have some horrible issues with large or very active boards, the symptons often being what you describe.
Here is an image of vBulletin 3.0.0 RC2 as it is currently running on my PC.
Please note this is not final, I still have some tidying to do and descisions on quote colours etc. Looks pretty much like TTLG does at the moment, don't you agree? :)

MsLedd will beat me for this, but here's a universal reason to upgrade:
Newer software is always, always, always better. Always. Almost. There are very, very few exceptions to this rule. For instance, NHL '96 sucked compared to NHL '95, cause they removed the fighting. Also, Norton SystemWorks 2004 is far worse than Norton SystemWorks 2002, in as much as Pete Norton seems to be on a mission to ass up his flagship software as much as possible.

I'm gonna be a little bit of a jerk here ...
New versions of software aren't always better, especially if what you already have works. However, as long as you've got a good reason to upgrade, then do it. Otherwise, upgrading to a newer version
just because it's been released isn't necessarily a good idea. It can introduce new bugs, bloated amounts of features, etc.
Usually there's a good reason though, so irritating people like me usually just keep quiet.

The best reason is no support for old software. If they don't support the old stuff you don't have much choice. "Who you gonna call?"
I've got one client left running an old SCO Xenix version. Well, he's switching to a LAN as I type. Whew! "I'm much better now."
