im currently having a problem finishing this quest.
the counsilor who asks you to have the Caldera Mines halted
refuses to give me support even though ive completed this quest (i think)
ive set free every slave inside the Caldera Ebony Mines and the 2 slaves in their
shacks just outside.
i have the secret book which exposes their accounting practices and talked to both of the owners of the mine about halting prodution.
when i talk to Cunius Pelelius in Caldera Gov. Manor, and ask him about the "evidence of corruption" i get a syntax error message which reads:
Script Dialogue CompileAndRun
Syntax Error Line 2.
Could not find variable "givenKey".
==>CompileAndRun problem was found in Topic "evidence of corruption"
"All right, all right. I'll tell you this because I trust you. Take this key. There's a record book in Odral's Helvi chest on the second floor. Stendar have mercy on me if anyone finds out about this."
from here im asked whether i want to continue running this executable.
after i get this message, the game completely freezes up regardless of how i answer.
i unfortunately saved the game right before i got to this point and i have no way to go back.
so im asking, is there anyway to correct this or skip it altogether, and still continue the game.
many thanks in advance for any help that a tech illiterate can comprehend :D

Save your save game file somewhere else and reinstall morrowind. Something obviously got corrupted.

There are two quests: Caldera_Corrupt and Caldera_Disrupt. I think it is pretty easy to foul-up the order in which the steps of these quest need be completed. I had difficulties, and I think it was because I freed Dahleena too early (while I was completing the first quest (Caldera_Corrupt). It seemed to activate the second quest prematurely, and when I tried to engage the Redoran contact to discuss the first quest, the topics were restricted to the second quest. For that reason, I wasn't able to close the first quest. I can't tell if this is what is happening to you, but if you thing it is the easiest thing to do is to load a saved game prior to freeing Dahleena, and complete the first quest as it was intended (without freeing Dahleena). If you don't have such a save (or it is very inconvenient to go back so far) there may be console fixes to the problem (if you are not on X-Box). You will have to bring Dahleena back and perform some journal editing. I won't give you the details until you confirm that this is an appropriate solution to your problem. I wrote a rather detailed procedure for someone in a different forum (in a personal message), but I imagine I could find it again if you think it would be helpful.

thx for your help guys.
and yes, Cyrano, thats exactly what happened to me.
i first freed Dahleena then her neighbor right before i got the secret book.
after going back to the redoran guy i found out that what i did only made things worse.
so i went back and freed the rest of the slaves.
i think i did exactly the same thing you did Cyrano.
and unfortunately i will lose about 30 game days if i have to use my other save :(
id greatly appreciate it if you could post a URL link for me and i can read what you wrote to the other person.
if you cant find a URL ill just start over, you dont need to type it all out again.
thx again.
*im playing on my PC btw~

Sigur, this is the text from a personal message I sent to another person, I hope that it will permit you to get your quest back on track. I might have PM'd it to you, but since this appears to be a common problem, perhaps others will benefit from this discussion:
Further reflection on your (and my) experience leads me to believe that you started the first part of the quest (gathering evidence of corruption), but freeing Dahleena threw your journal into the second part of the quest (shutting down the mine). Now you can only engage Llethri to discuss the second quest, but that prevents you from completing the first. You can confirm this using a console command.
Type: “GetJournalIndex, HR_CalderaCorrupt”
This will return the current journal index for the first part of the quest.
>>10 means that you have accepted the quest.
>>30 and >>70 are intermediate goals toward completing the quest.
>>100 indicates that Llethri acknowledges that you have completed the quest.
Type: “GetJournalIndex, HR_CalderaDisrupt”
This will return the current journal index for the second part of the quest. Ideally, it should return >>0 if you haven't formally accepted the quest, but I expect that you will get a different value. Likely you will see the value >>50 indicating that you have freed Dahleena, as you claim. Yes that did screw you up, but it can be fixed. Another console command will permit you to edit the journal record (not necessarily in the journal window, but as far as interacting with NPC's).
Type: “SetJournalIndex, HR_CalderaDisrupt, 0” (if the editor doesn't like this, eliminate the second comma.)
This will change the journal index for the second part of the quest to 0. you may confirm this by typing “GetJournalIndex, HR_CalderaDisrupt”, and it should return the value >>0. Now when you speak with Llethri, he should discuss the first part of the quest. If you have the ledger, I expect that he will accept it and the quest will be complete. Again, you and use the console command: “GetJournalIndex, HR_CalderaCorrupt” and it should return the value >>100. If you don't have the ledger any more, use the following console command:
Type: “AddItem, bk_CalderaRecordBook2, 1”
The ledger will be added to your inventory.
Now Llethri will assign the second part of the quest for you to complete. Since you already dismissed Dahleena, you will need to restore her. I suppose you could execute the console command I gave you yesterday from you current location, but if you are a purist, you will return to Slave Shack 2, and restore her in her ‘natural' environment. To do that...
Type: “PlaceAtPC, dahleena, 1, 1, 1”
Chat with her, free her again (I hope you still have the key), and your journal index will be set to >>50. See Llethri and you will complete the quest. If you don't have the key, it can be restored to your inventory like the ledger, but I neglected to check on its ID. You could try variations on “AddItem, key_caldera_slave, 1”, (“1” is just the count, the number of such items you want added to your inventory). Let me know if you need that information, otherwise I will assume that it's not a problem.
Good luck, Counselman Sigur.
Cyrano.

I actually bothered registering for this. ^.^
Thank you Cyrano very much (x lots) for finding/writing out that stuff. I had got distracted and not saved for a few hours and would have been one unhappy camper - the console fix worked perfectly.
And I couldn't find this in the usual places I look despite quite a bit of searching...
