Why does a single player game have to require an always online connection in the first place? Issues with internet connections are not exactly unheard of. And it's not always the ISP that fails, sometimes it's the publisher that fails to provide a reliable service.
From the customer's point of view, it has no benefits and only potential downsides.
It also means the publisher can essentially "turn off" a singleplayer game, which is unacceptable.
Besides, it's not like they actually
need that data unless the development team is incompetent or they want to not do any QA in the first place. I interpret stuff like:
Quote:
It allows us for telemetry, like, if everybody's falling off ladders and dying, holy shit that shows up.
to mean that he either has absolutely no confidence in the QA team or he's trying to deflect the question because the real answer would undermine everything else he said.

I'm a massive luddite, and will stop listening to new music or watching new movies if I can't own them on physical media. Some may argue this has already happened. Anyway, for gaming it bothers me significantly less, because I'm using a device that's always connected to the internet to play them. I think there's an argument to be had when console systems/games require persistent online nonsense (requiring internet to use your Steamdeck is hilarious), but my PC is pretty much a brick at this point if my DSL goes down.
If a persistent online requirement hurts the experience of playing the game, of course, all bets are off.

Telemetry and metrics-driven design has been
an industry buzzw a thing for over a decade now and somehow all these other companies seem to manage without an always online requirement.

Not to mention people who live in rural communities or other places where internet connections can be slow and spotty.

I think this looks great.

(
https://archive.is/YROEy) No 60fps performance mode for the console version at launch reeks of being rushed to market. Glorified early access like Halo Infinite (shipped w/o campaign co-op + Forge mode), Prey 2017 PS4 were (which didn't have PS4 Pro support at launch either).

As Jason pointed out, discounts do not indicate a flop. I found some (
https://vginsights.com/developer/7989/arkane-studios) actually useful information, which shows that Dishonored 2 made $70M on Steam alone, and Prey $44M. Unless you can show that Arkane's expenses exceeded its revenues, which I doubt you can, those are no flops.
A game that's been out for years will probably cross the break even point eventually? NO, YOU DON'T SAY. Don't be obtuse, it's plebian business common knowledge of the industry that AAA publisher shareholders typically value launch sales above all else, feeding directly into decisions making.
Where's Dishonoured 3 and Prey 2, mate? Oh right, the franchises are dead and Zenimax had Arkane twisting in the wind for a while, not knowing what to do with them. Hence co-developing those Wolfenstein spin-off games.

As for Mr "super fucking subversive" Harvey Smith saying that they're considering an offline mode, I won't hold my breath for it. Sister studio 343 Industries promised splitscreen local co-op for future Halos after H5 backlash, yet it was cancelled for Infinite.

Literally the only reference for either game being a disappointment was a copy/pasted unsourced article that said sales of physical copies were down. So yeah, they were huge flops and Arkane will never be allowed to make a game again.
If Skyrim sold so well, where's Elder Scrolls 6 anyway.
Anarchic Fox on 14/4/2023 at 00:15
So, in the face of evidence that the games aren't flops, you try to redefine "flop" as something that takes place in the minds of shareholders.
Thank you for providing the link in support of my other point.

If Dishoonored and Prey wouldn't have been flops, there would have been sequels. It's a fact that Arkane wanted to do Dishonored 3, but, Bethesda said no, because Dishonored 2 hasn't sold satisfactorily (and, which other reason is there to not continue the series? You don't just shut something off which sells like hot cakes.).

I don't expect another Dishonored anytime soon, if ever. Arkane seems to do fine with colourful action shooters with modern lollipop characters. Just like everyone else.

Is saw there have been 2 reviews leaked so far for Redfall, despite the review embargo not being over until later today. They were 4/10 and 6/10. I know that doesn't mean everything, but yikes. I'm glad it's on Gamepass so I don't have to make a $70 decision.
