One of the biggest crimes in gaming is that rather than ironing out a few of the annoying elements of Far Cry 2, Unisoft just flat out paved over it with generic open world collectathon shite.

Purchasing this is gonna be a nope from me, dawg. Exclusively Game Pass rental territory. I don't do always online DRM for SP.

Always online is not a complete deal breaker, but it factors into the price I'll pay. I'm willing to pay more for a movie on Blu-Ray than the same movie on a streaming service, because I retain an offline playable copy. Same with games. A game that requires a persistent connection may as well be streamed, and I'm not down with that at $70.
The world looks good. The gameplay looks like typical Arkane guns & magic.
But vampires, why'd it have to be vampires?

Always online for single player sucks, period. Gran Turismo 7 is a shining example of why: a couple weeks after it released, the servers went offline and no one could play it for three or four days. It also doesn't bode well for legacy support although I guess sometimes patches are released when a game's near its end of life.
That said, I don't have an Xbox or a PC that could handle this, so I will sadly be missing out as well.

You have to be careful buying into live service games, which it looks like might be the case here, if they require an always online connection. They only last as long as they are supported and can get cancelled pretty much at the drop of a hat when the profits aren't quite what the publisher expected.

Due to low budget (I'm back in graduate school again), I get my Internet connection via smartphone tethering, with a 10GB limit. I know Internet access grows cheaper by the day, but this decision prevents large swathes of people from playing, particularly those from less affluent countries.

That tends to happen for unsuccessful games. If Redfall is successful, I predict a patch quietly removing the Internet requirement sometime after release. Who knows what internal pressures Arkane is under to require a
Bethesda.net connection of all things, but these pressure should ease after release.

Nah, I'm on fibre with an unlimited data cap.
I don't support games with always online DRM for SP components. It's the principle of the matter.
People can be corporate apologists and weak-willed CONSOOMERS all that they want. As the game industry gets gradually worse with anti-consumer BS they'll get what they deserve.
(You'd think a discussion community whose entire identity is solely based on the legacies of ancient games, would place great importance on the need to push game preservation in the industry, but apparently not? 🤷*♂️)

"If Redfall is successful". Do you really think there'll be much pressure for the majority to buy a game that can be rented Day 1 through a Game Pass sub? Non-core Bethesda Game Studios published games from Bethesda already had a reputation for being under-advertised and flopping badly as it is, Arkane games especially so. (If MS hadn't bought Bethesda, Arkane very likely would've been downgraded into a BGS support studio.)
Best case scenario: Redfall might do well enough on Steam, because AAA hypebeast normies might be starved for things to play in May.
Also good luck with MS patching in a kill switch for online DRM for when they turn off the servers for this game. Precedent: All of the ebooks got deleted from MS' servers.

I don't know, but I figure Microsoft tracks Game Pass playtime. A game that picks up lots of such playtime but relatively few separate purchases would still be viewed as a success, since it anchors Game Pass subscriptions.

It's true that Bethesda being in charge of advertising for Arkane games has served them poorly, but none of the Arkane games have flopped, much less flopped badly.

You've switched from Arkane to Bethesda to MS to justify your points, but while they're all owned by MS, they also all have their own executive staff. The precedent seems to be that MS allows its game studios considerable autonomy, and does not micromanage them. Rare Studios and Obsidian are good examples. Executives at Microsoft will not care about videogame preservation, but I guarantee you that people at Arkane do. And studios do release patches that remove DRM long after release: (
https://gamerant.com/dying-light-2-patch-removes-drm-adds-nvidia-dlss-3/) here is an example from just this month.
