Can you get items back from the Museum of Artifacts in Mournhold, once you have sold/donated them? I sold one item which I later would have wanted back, but there doesn't seem to be any other option except blatantly stealing it...

Nope, as far as I know thievery is the only way to get items back. I sold the Lord's Mail to the museum beore I knew I needed it for a quest. The lady who runs the museum would'nt sell it back so I had to nick it.
There may be a plug-in that allows you to buy things back, but I've not heard of one...

Oh, well. Thievery doesn't suit my character, and the quest I need the item for isn't one I'm too interested in completing... I'll know to be more careful in the future. ;)

You want your items back? Don't donate them in the first place then :p
You can always just kill the guards one by one using taunt first though, then its not difficult to 'borrow' items back even with a poor thievery skill. If you dont have 100% chameleon from enchanted items or spells your missing out.
Alternatively just type in the console the item you want for the quest and give it to the guy.
player->additem"daedric long bow"1 for example (check sites for info or just look in the editor for specifiic items)

Stealing it back doesn't fit my character... and cheating is... CHEATING. You know? ;)
That's life... make misteakes, live with the consequences... ;)
