Autechre -
QuaristiceThis album is not going to convert anyone to Autechre who didn't like them already, but the fact that with this (and
Untilted before it) they seem to be moving away from the quagmire of electronic noise that was
Confield and
Draft 7.30 means they've actually become listenable again. Some songs are still pretty wtf (
Fol3, for example, just seems an extension of
Rettic Ac, already not a particular good song), but there are some absolute beauties on here -
rale,
Theswere,
WNSN,
Notwo and
Outh9X spring to mind. The songs are generally also much shorter in length on this album than usual, so it doesn't take long for something new and interesting to pop up.
This is interesting, I've heard like murmers elsewhere but I haven't checked it out yet. My favourite period of theirs by far is around
Chiastic Slide-
Tri repetae-Peel sessions (or one of them) and to a lesser extent
LP5 (maybe everyone's is, I dunno). How does this compare?
(Probably worth mentioning that I like Confield quite a bit too, but it ain't no casual listen by and large)
Oh and I haven't listed to anything new lately. Didn't even put down the loop tracks for five minutes and get off my arse for a new Barry Adamson! Which is some sort of crime.

Compared to Confield, Quaristice is very easy to listen to. I find Confield only rewards focused listening -- great if you're paying attention, but let it shift to the background and it suddenly becomes irritating -- but Quaristice is almost like Autechre making their closest approximation to a pop album. The beats are less obtuse but the sounds themselves are still inventive. Check out the samples I posted if you're curious.

I probably haven't given it enough of a chance. And I'm determined to make myself like Portishead.
So anyway, how about some recommendations from the Nick Cave fans as to what I should be buying after
Lazarus (also I watched the video and was very impressed with Cave's look and demeanor).
It's kinda hard to recommend anything similar to
DLD but if you go for
Murder Ballads or
Let Love In, no harm done. I have a soft spot for
Nocturama as well.
Abbattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus are a bit meh, I just couldn't find any track that would come close to the Cave-ish sound of late eighties to mid-nineties.

Top FiveDarkthrone - Dark Thrones and Black FlagsIt's fucking Darkthrone. They can do whatever they want and I'll love it.
Warrel Dane - Praises to the War MachinePeople who hate Nevermore's singer Warrel Dane clearly love Hitler and tampon porn. People who love Warrel Dane know that he has fantastic range and that this album, while clearly being Warrel, does not feel like a Nevermore clone.
Cult of Luna - Eternal KingdomAs post-metal goes I enjoy Cult of Luna but they're not my favourites; that said, this album blew me away.
Metallica - Death MagneticIt's about time they put out an album worth listening to. Combining the best of their 80s work while putting to good use the tricks they picked up in the intervening years, putting Hetfield through rehab and replacing Ulrich with a drum machine,
Death Magnetic is a triumphant return.
Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's SkullFucking amazing and absolutely the most relaxing album I've heard in a long time.
Favourite New Discovery of an old albumAlcest - Souvenirs d'un autre monde (2007) Quite frankly one of the most beautiful albums I ever heard, combining post rock with the slightest tinges of black metal. This album is flat out fucking amazing and you're an asshole if you don't like at least (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_cqIFqyET4) this song.
Biggest DisappointmentOpeth - WatershedSounded like Pain of Salvation. This is not a good thing. Every time I listen to it I just hate this album more because it's so fucking boring and not at all like Opeth.

The two albums st patrick recommended are your best first stops, I agree.
From the early stuff though, I'd go for From Her To Eternity (which, if you like it, means you'll also like the next one, The Firstborn is Dead -- they're very similar IMO) and Tender Prey.

Best album: Revolution Roulette by Poets of the Fall (their first two albums,
Signs of Life &
Carnival of Rust were outstanding as well)
Best single: Broken Promises by Phoenix Effect (Janne Kärkkäinen, late of Sunrise Avenue; so far this is the only song I've heard, but he sounds very promising)
Honorable mention (single): You Know My Name/cover (of Chris Cornell's Bond theme) by Poets of the Fall (from The Voice's & Sony BMG's
Livenä Vieraissa double CD compilation) The Poets don't often do covers, but I have to admit that I like their version better than Cornell's. :p Here's the link; unfortunately you have to wade through a minute or so interview (in Suomeksi (a little help here, henke!)) with the lead singer, Marko Saaresto (simply adorable man with a serious set of pipes), and though the guys look dashing in their tuxs I think it rather inhibited their usually animated, entertaining, & enthusiastic performance. Worth a look-see anyhow.

That's my list and I'm sticking to it.

Poets of the Fall are great. (Yes, Max Payne 2 turned me on to them.)

My top five, in no particular order.
Sadly I haven't heard any new dark ambient come out for the 2008 year. =(
1) Russian Circles - Station
2) Cult of Luna - Eternal Kingdom
3) Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull
4) Warrel Dane - Praises to the War Machine
5) boris - Smile
