Yeah, tell me about it. They just get better and better and still have a really small fanbase, despite the fact that almost every decent rock, metal, or funk band for the last 10 years cites them as a major influence. There's no justice in the world. :(

@raph, the Joni Letters was great, but also released in 2007.
Ok, I stand corrected.

Didn't listen to much new music in 2008, but from what little I did,
phantom planet - raise the dead
oasis-dig out your soul
the streets-everything is borrowed

I guarantee nothing on the album or EP is as bad as what happens here: (

I really felt for them, they look pretty shocked when the instruments come in. These things happen, it's just very unfortunate it was on TV.
How embarassing and probably one of the worst shows to do it on too, what with a room full of musicians watching you! Still actually seemed like a cool song and I'm usually quite anti-indie pop, so I'm gonna check some of this stuff out.

Ick. There's much better stuff in that direction, plus I can't stand people who got big by stealing.

In no order:
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
They may be a one-color band, but I'll take that for at least one album.
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
I hated the preview clips for this album, but when you hear it all together, it just works.
Sigur Ros - Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust
If only for the first two tracks being such a surprise. The rest is more in their usual style, but that's certainly not a bad thing.
Girl Talk - Feed the Animals
Madness.
Cloud Cult - Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes)
A lot of this album takes you by surprise, with lots of stopping and starting and jerking around musically. But it never really looses the flow.
AU - Verbs
Folk, with bonus psychedelia. Just how I likes it.
Colourmusic - f, monday, orange, February, Venus, lunatic, 1 or 13
If "Put in a little gas" doesn't put a smile on your face, you're listening to it wrong.
Thao - We Brave Bee Stings And All
Simple feel-good music.
Honorable Mention:
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
Shearwater - Rook

I'm yet to hear a band that sounds like this, so I'd be interested if you could point me in their direction. Secondly, you're incredibly naiive if you think that no band you like has ever taken ideas from someone else. In this instance I'm not sure an early demo or a t-shirt really propelled them to being big, not to mention the fact that I really don't think they have made it "big" yet.

I'm too cool to buy cds or something I guess but I did get (
http://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Symmetry/dp/B001HDYK6Y) Perfect Symmetry by Keane and I think it's pretty good! Apparently it's pretty different from their other albums (which I haven't heard and know nothing about). There are videos for tracks 1, 2, and 5 on youtube.
