Earth are great but not founded by any Nirvana member. That Carlson dude was just a friend of Cobain's and the guy who handed him that fateful gun. Maybe that's why you like them, you bad evil being.
Huh, you're right.
Man, there goes a catchphrase. Damn it!

I have to confess my initial feeling about Vampire Weekend voiced in a separate thread was wrong. They've grown on me (sorry Aja you were right).
My list is would be very similar to other people's; Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Wolf Parade, Sigur Ros etc.
Not mentioned so far in the thread unless I've missed them;
Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling (Not their best but still very good)
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive (Very Bruce Springsteen)
Wedding Present - El Rey
Hon. Mention: Neil Young - Chrome Dreams 2 (Far from his best but nice to know he's still around)

Just to tack on a couple that I've been hooked on the last couple of weeks since I posted.
Fuck Buttons-Street Horrsing: Although musically this album is chalk and cheese to Tool, the sensation of listening to songs that were brutally grating at times, and incredibly fragile at others really reminded me of Tool. This album is pretty damn brilliant, in that the range of emotions covered within 50 minutes is fairly vast. Most of the songs do build an immense wall of sound by their climax though, but I found that it was well paced in that these really intense sections didn't drag out to long. I'm not particularly familiar with this whole "noise" genre, and really found this to be a thoroughly satisfying listen. One thing I certainly found is that you really feel like your ears and brain have been blasted clean with a pressure hose by the end.
The Rapture- !K7 Tapes: Once again impressive for its range, except this time its the range of genres it covers. This is basically a dj set by the rapture recorded. Starting and ending with soul/funk, and spending an hour traveling through a lot of what I'd define (probably incorrectly) as electro/disco songs. What's impressive is how these guys have managed to segue between genres that are vastly different without any sort of jarring. Basically it's like one Girl Talk song, stretched out over an album, that you can dance to. Basically bought this the second I saw they were remixing Gostface Killah.

I liked Madonna's "Hard Candy", NIN's "The Slip", Crystal Castles, M83's "Saturdays=Youth", No Age's "Nouns", Matmos' "Supreme Balloon", Keane's "Perfect Symmetry", and... h'mm, can't think of all that much else. Didn't really buy a whole lot of new albums in 2008, really.

This is actually a 2009 album but the new Animal Collective 'Merriweather Post Pavilion' has made me forget about everything from 2008. I've followed this band for about 6 years but I couldn't ever predict the kind of development that came on this album. Highly recommended!!

I deleted it yesterday after listening to it for half an hour. Hookless, indistinguishable, new age, wavering, didgeridoo. Those are but some of the unflattering adjectives "Merriweather Post Pavilion" left me with until I blissfully completely forgot about it.
There's just too much good music out there to care: (

That's not to say the new Animal Collective isn't just great. Just how tastes can differ.

Half an hour? I'm not enamoured of the album either, but a half-hour isn't enough time to make a reasonable judgement of ANY album.
I'll check out your links, and you better believe I'll play each more than once ;)

Yeah, in the past I've been more interested in Animal Collective the band than their musical output, if that makes sense, but
Merriweather Post Pavilion is an absolute grand slam.
