Bikerdude, what are your thoughts on the GTX 470? What you wrote about the 480 pretty much seems to be in line with nine out of ten reviews, but they tend to be more positive when it comes to its little brother.

As the card is pretty much the same price as the HD5870 and about the same or faster performance wise, but the GTX470 runs almost as hot as the 480 so that is a consideration if you don't have a well ventilated case. The one place the 470 does better than the 5870 is in the very latest games that use tessellation (eg. Metro2033) plus you get the Physx when buying an nVidia card. But in a lot of DX9 games the 5870 is faster than the 480, never mind the 470.

Sorry to pester you with more questions :cheeky:, but is the 5870 consistently faster in DX9 across different resolutions? I seem to remember reading that at 1680x1050 the GTX 470 tends to lead.
Anyway... I'm thinking that most likely a new graphics card is the last major update to my rig before I have to put together a new machine. I'm happy with the CPU, an E8600, but it's as high as the motherboard will go. Still, I hope to delay this for as long as possible.

Its much of a muchness, it all depends on the game, wither it has been optimized for ATi or nVidia and what the base pc config is, AMD or intel etc.. If your PSU is powerfull enough and your case can take the heat then the 470 will offer you the same performance as the 5870 plus physx.

BD - any chance you could link to the PhysX hack?
