Hey all
I`ve been out of the loop for quite some time when it comes to anime, but am a big fan of it. But more so the ones with good english voice overs like Rurouni Kenshin and Neon Evangelion. Even Ghost in the Shell stand alone complex was pretty awesome.
Anyways I`m looking for a new show to watch, but as I`ve been out of the loop for so long I dont know whats worth watching. Now before you start posting, I`m only interested in ones that have english voices in them. I hate reading subtitles *avoids incoming missiles*.
So with that in mind any suggestions would be welcome :).

Have you seen Samurai Champloo already? It's by the same director that did Cowboy Bebop, although it's not quite up to the same level of brilliance. I'm sure it'll have gotten a proper english release by now, although I can't vouch for the quality, since I'm not a deviant dub-fetischist like you.

Am I alone in thinking that alot of anime are better with sub titles?
Well, you've watched the ones I've seen and would reccommend, and usually I don't bother with series, so little that grabs me. More of a movie guy I think. Appleseed was ok, as was patlabor.
I would recommend the Devilman series, slightly raw but fucking visceral.
For 80's cheesey dystopian stuff there's Cyber City Oedo. Pretty old but I remember loving it.
3x3 eyes was quite good.

I don't like much Anime but I liked these very much:
Cowboy Bebop (has miniseries and movie)
Samurai Champloo
(

Guess that's all from me, other than everything from Hayao Miyazaki. Also, I have no idea about the voice acting quality you non-subtitle-reading weirdo. ;)

Not at all. While animation is one of the few areas where dubbing's tolerable, there's usually a lot more talent and effort invested in the original version.
Most of Satoshi Kon's stuff is worth taking a look at. I'm especially fond of Paranoia Agent.

I'm pretty behind on this stuff too, so most of my reccs are from some time ago.
lessee; Paranoia Agent was pretty cool, if weird, and providing you can get past the theme music. It starts out as a series of intertwining stories about ordinary people who find life backing them into a corner, and before they do something desperate they recieve a beating from a phantom rollerblading kid with a baseball bad dubbed 'Lil Slugger'. Yes, really. And it's not entirely a comedy. For a while it seems like people are just making it/him up and/or copycatting some real attack in order to get out of dealing with whatever problems they have. But Lil Slugger becomes a cultural phenomenon, turning up all over the place. Is he real or mass hysteria?
It gets more convoluted as it goes (naturally, it's anime). One memorable episode featured an internet suicide club of an old man and a really overweight guy getting together to do the deed, only to find their third member shows up and turns out to be an over enthusiastic 12yr old girl. In their efforts to lose her they meet up with lil slugger himself and end up chasing him all over the place trying to get him to kill them.
I don't know if FLCL was redubbed, or how that would work. But that's quite awesomely bizarre. I couldn't begin to explain the plot (maybe if I'd watched more of it...); something about a girl with a guitar (which is also a skateboard) and a guy with something growing out of his head. The structure of it is totally Goon Show/ Monty Python/ Young Ones absurdity. One second everything makes sense, then they'll parody Pokemon & Dragon Ball Z art styles for a fight scene, then switch to comic panel, then water colours, then imagine the story makes more sense if the cast were represented as plants performing kabuki.
I can't really attest to how good the dubs are on these as I avoid dubs like the plague. The translation is much better if its not being crammed into some completely wrong mouth shapes. Plus the acting is rarely great and usually over done. Something like 'Perfect Blue', which is a Brian de Palma /Hitchcock style psycho-sexual thriller, and a damn good one for the most part, I have a hard time getting into with the corny english track. The Japanese acting might not be great either, but it least it's harder to tell. So, yeah, I think they did half decent dubs of these but I couldn't really say.

Ooh my favourite topic.
Look out for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Think Diebuster + FLCL + Abenobashi + (Evangelion - emo). Probably Gainax's best work ever. DVD is coming out soon from what I hear. Not sure about the dubbing.
