Megaten will have to wait. It's a huge series with some pretty hardcore RPGs in it that, unlike the Persona games, are not aimed at more casual players. Plus I'd like to get my language skills up a bit so that I can play the originals with less effort.

Mostly for language practice, but original versions also often have fun little quirks and idiosyncrasies that get lost in translation and there are some cultural references that tend to get localised.
I also read books and watch movies in their original language whenever I can and I played through the Witcher games with Polish audio and English subtitles, despite speaking very little Polish (though I can intuit the meaning of quite a few words by knowing Russian). I just like to experience other cultures unmediated I guess. This is probably half the reason why I became a translator -- I want other people to be able to experience at least some of it.
Plus, like Abysmal said, it's really satisfying to reap the rewards of all the work you've put towards learning another language. Even if it's just a simple NES game.

The first Megaten games debuted on NES, actually. They were only later ported to SNES.

I loved Zero Tolerance on the Megadrive. Probably hasn't aged well, but it was a functioning FPS without the need for extra hardware.
And we spent many, MANY happy hours with Micro Machines 2: Tournament Edition, even playing the completely mad, share-a-pad, 8 player mode. We'd watch Liquid TV on BBC2 (Ren & Stimpy / Aeon Flux), get mildly-to-ludicrously blazed, then play many, many hours of tiny-car-racing around various household locales. When we got bored of that, we'd switch to Mortal Kombat 2.
Speedball 2 also had a great port on Megzdrive, and my first Syndicate experience was on the Megadrive too.

Malf just took me back to the 90's.

There is a really good remake of speedball 2 available on steam. If the words 'Brutal Deluxe' bring back memories you should get it.

Holy diagonal controls, Batman!
For anyone thinking of playing it -- if you value your thumb at all, either use an external program to remap the d-pad or get a hacked rom to fix it.
Otherwise, doesn't look bad. It reminds me a lot of a PS game called Alundra, only with more talking animals and treasure hunting and less nightmares and clinical depression.

That's probably because they're both made by the same bunch of people.
