Unless you're an AV junky, I wouldn't pay over over the odds for 200Hz when 100Hz looks so awesome.
The reason the 200Hz feature is appealing is for the stereoscopic potential. nVidia's current tech needs a 120Hz display, and recent rumour had it that Sony might be putting in stereo 3D capabilities in the PS3 in the next couple of years, possibly requiring 200Hz screens. And, if the infrastructure for it becomes common enough, I'd expect to see 3D DVD releases popping up within the next 5 to 7 years. Sure, it's speculation at this time, but I think it's bound to come eventually, and I really got the impression that future-proofing is a big deal for my father on this purchase.

Ostriig - if you do think about the Sony, check if you have a Sony Centre near you - the one near me currently has a sale on at the moment (the 40" version of the Z4500 was reduced from £1500 to £1000, for example) and are also doing £100 trade-in on your old TV, working or not.
Thanks for the tip! Though it's my dad I'm trying to pick up info for, and I don't suppose the Romanian stores will be running the same discounts as the UK ones. He said he'll likely be checking out the stores some time this week or the next, to look at some Bravias and the Philips Biker mentioned, they're still a few good weeks from moving into the new place.

Ulukai - how is the backlighting on the Sony? Reviews say its inconsistent and that model gets a bad rap across the board for it.
I've been looking at the 37" version (37W5500) which isn't supposed to have such issues. Or, and I'd prefer this, the 40W4000 - older version of yours which has great reviews and no backlighting issues.
Thing is the 40W5500 is only marginally more expensive than the W37, I'd like bigger and 40W4000 seem pretty rare atm. New ones anyway.

I haven't noticed any issues with the backlighting, even when watching in a darkened room. Best TV I've ever owned bar none.
The black is so...very, very black. It's awesome.

Ive not heard good things about the ps3 slim, due in no small fact that its a severly cut down ps3 - missing lots of features and made with much cheaper components....

Really? The only feature I've heard is missing is the ability to install 3rd party operating systems. Are there more? As for the components, they did have a press release stating that (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1890157#post1890157) production costs had already gone down 70% before the launch of the Slim, but I thought that was a streamlining on the parts manufacturers' side, rather than new, cheaper partners. But I haven't really looked into that, it could've just been a bad guess.

Can't say I've heard of any complaints about performance or stability yet either.
bikerdude on 18/9/2009 at 15:02
I didnt say complaints, I just did some googling and I didn't like what I read. And regards the cost of components, the main reason the price has gone down is due to cheaper components being used, which is typical of sony - still charge the sony price yet lower the quality..

I'm going to have to ask for proof that it is that and not decreased production costs / economies of scale.

Its quit logical when you think about it, how else have Sony cut their productions costs by 70%. But I shall attempte to dig up the info Im referring too..
