I'll also suggest Penthouse, by Luna.
A terrifically chill and mellow album, without making you want to fall asleep.

It would be rather rote and predictable of me to recommend an R.E.M. album....
...so I'll say: Any of the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex soundtracks (particularly the first one). A lot of high quality variety there.

Either of Porcupine Tree`s best 2 albums "In Absentia" or "Dead Wing". Both excellent excellent albums.

You don't think that Porcupine Tree might be a bit to melancholy? It is pretty damn depressing at times.
Edit: since we are talking about PT I wonder why they are so popular, I quite like my prog rock, especially the wanky stuff, which is why I really love The Mars Volta, Tool. But Porcupine Tree songs just don't ever seem to go anywhere, they seem to lack dynamics.

There were some great songs on their latest effort, At War with the Mistics
No there weren't.

People can say what they want about Porcupine Tree, nothing is worse than Pain of Salvation. They are literally the worst prog band I have ever heard.

Porcupine Tree had a few good albums (and one that I really like) but they've become so formulaic that they really aren't worth listening to anymore. Their pandering to the 12-18 year old no-one-understands-my-taste-in-music high school demographic doesn't help them any.
I still love Signify but the best thing Steven Wilson ever did was produce Blackwater Park (which, ironically, led to the metal influence that kinda ruined his main band).

I hated Opeth's Watershed when it first came out. I listened to it three times and it actually made me hate it worse, and by the third time I fell asleep halfway through. I realize Opeth has really been emphasising their progressive side but jesus christ there are better bands to sound like than Pain of Shitting.
I heard the new Opeth single today. The first song was a radio edit of "Burden" from Watershed and it reminded me why I continue to detest the album.
Their cover of Alice in Chains was pretty good though.
