Red Sparowes are damned dreary too. Their album "Every Red Heart Shines Towards the Red Sun" is about the Great Sparrow Campaign, which was part of the Great Leap Forward- China's attempt at switching from agriculture to industry that failed miserably and killed up to 43 million.
Awesome album though.

their latest disc, Pocket Symphony
why would you say such a thing

Because after repeated listens it actually really grew on me.

Late to the party, but given the "one recommendation only" limit I'd recommend Alien Sex Fiend's Curse. Danceable in places, slightly disturbing in others, with a somewhat mischevious sense of humor. Most of their stuff is pretty good, although I prefer the earlier albums.

Whatever Dio album 'Holy Diver' is on, cos that song is fucking rocking

The album is actually called that, PigLick. :P
Anyway since I only get to pick one I will suggest Isis - In the Absence of Truth. Very listenable, very awesome.

I want to change my recommendation to Viva Voce - "Lovers Lead the Way" (available in a double album re-release with "The Heat Can Melt Your Brain," which is also really good). It's a fantastic bit of pseudo 60s-psychedelic pop, with a couple of TREMENDOUS instrumental tracks. When the bells kick in in "Yr Epic Heart" you'll see what I mean.

Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin

Yeah the Flaming Lips is a good call, Yoshima Battles the Pink Robots is probably a bit of a better place to start, it's pretty brilliant. There were some great songs on their latest effort, At War with the Mistics
