so, bikerdude, is 300 too bright for me to really get the most out of games like thief and amnesia? obviously, i don't want to spend a lot, but i'm trying to figure out if i can do this for about $300 or if i'm going to have to go up to $500. given all the holiday sale madness, i'm thinking the next few days are the time to strike.

N.O. Eye, why don't you just choose a monitor with a VA panel with low response times? It's the best what you can get when you want enjoy games or movies with dark scenes. You can read my linked review for my monitor, chapter "Contrast in games and movies". Just my two cents. :)

Corrected, it was a typo on my part. And the lowest "working" Black level of your samsung is 0.04, not 0.01(at this level the brightness is at zero and the monitor would be hard to see)

300 is the maximum, as in there is no point getting brighter than this.

As PsymH suggests, a VA monitor with low response times is a good option. Both the BenQ and the Samsung mentioned above are AMVA - see the (
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/panel_technologies.htm) tech article about panel types.
I personaly would still try and get a good IPS based panel with LED lighting and as good a contract ration & black light level as possible.

Cool. I'm looking forward to your opinion after some testing :thumb:

Jep, that's true. The stand is not the best, although I can live with that because my desk is not very high. The dell IPS monitor is maybe a better choice, but the low black level is a very important fact for me.

well, i ordered this between PsymH and Bikerdude's responses but had to hold off on picking it up because i'm moving. i will say that i tend to sit up high when i play and i count myself among the admittedly-small "i can handle it" crowd when it comes to the height (i actually had my current monitor on a pedestal thingy at my old place, now that i think about it). i also think the minimal inputs, while puzzling, won't be a problem since i'm only going to use it for my PC.
the only thing i'd like some feedback on is the resolution. should i be too concerned that the rez is only 1920x1080? like PsymH, the lower black levels are really important to me, but i'm not sure how much lower .04 is than .14, practically speaking.
it's safe to assume i'm going to pick it up and try it out, though, since i haven't seen any killer deals on the alternative and the price on the one i got has already jumped back up to $400. i really appreciate the help, btw. the pcmonitors revew was especially helpful.

ok, I went ahead and grabbed the Samsung but then had to finish my move, so I apologize for the delay in getting back. In short, I really like the monitor and the tall stand really isn't an issue for me, as I expected.
my desktop background is a concept art reveal from the new Thief (Garrett standing against a skewed-perspective backdrop of the cathedral) and I was struck immediately by how much more I could see (admittedly, my previous monitor was pretty crappy). colors look really nice, too.
but I can't really draw any final conclusions until I get a couple of technical questions answered and I was hoping to get some help here. both stem from points made in the pcmonitors review (
http://pcmonitors.info/reviews/samsung-s27c750p) and are probably related:
The first is this:
Quote:
Our only gripe here is that it would be useful to be able to adjust brightness using the HDMI connection that most users will be using.
I assume the second quote deals with how to take care of this, unless it's impossible. but the link referred to doesn't clear things up at all. can someone tell me how to fix my settings to adjust the gamma levels? my graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series card.
Here is the second quote (the link referred to in the text below is this: (
http://pcmonitors.info/reviews/aoc-i2369vm):)
Quote:
Our main test system’s GPU is an AMD Radeon 7950 which was connected to the monitor using the supplied HDMI cable. By default ‘HDMI Black Level’ in the main menu’s ‘Picture’ options is greyed out on AMD GPUs. They run by default using the ‘YCbCr 4:4:4’ Pixel Format. If you change this in Catalyst Control to ‘RGB 4:4:4 Pixel Format PC Standard (Full RGB)’ – see calibration section of this review for instructions – then you can access the ‘HDMI Black Level’ option. Setting this to ‘Low’ rather than ‘Normal’ makes shades look even more vibrant (and noticeably oversaturated in places) but introduces fairly significant shade crushing. The shade range, particularly at the low end, is reduced significantly. For that reason we avoided using this setting on our AMD GPU.
any help? when i went into the control settings none of my options matched so i was pretty much stuck. so far I like the monitor but i feel like it can do more, and i don't like the idea of not being able to optimize it as described above.

Do you mean this?

http://s7.directupload.net/images/131219/temp/m85zlsd8.jpgI think these options are only available when you connect your monitor with HDMI or DVI connections. But in my personal opinion I would choose the "YCvCr 4:4:4" option. As descriped in your quote above, with the RGB option you get black crushes in dark scenes, which means you can see much lesser details in the darkness. For my own game experience I take the default gamma value in Thief and turn the brightness down to 0 %. With this, I'm very satisfied. Oh, and I choosed the gamma mode 2 in the monitor menu.
