Reason for emigration #2: Scotland is a nation of bitter drunken louts. - by Scots Taffer

If it's any consolation I don't think anyone actually has this negative impression of Scotsmen (that I have met) but I am on the other side of the world.

Most people assume I'm Irish, which I am really - especially in my nature - so the Scots heritage and background isn't truly applicable to me but the attitudes definitely rubbed off in my twenty odd years. What irked me most about the other day is the fact that we're on the other side of the planet from most of these people and that the happy-go-lucky amiable sorts over here don't NEED that sort of shit, it's not a large component of the culture here and the way of life and atmosphere is just totally different.
It's like that part of the shitty culture followed me over and crapped all over my nice, relaxed culture. :grr:

The reverse - the huge hordes of Aussies currently swamping the business side of the beer pumps - is what interests me more. We all know Britain's a terrible place for the reasons already outlined, so why come? My theory is that this is in part due to a feeling of isolation from Australia's remote geographical position in the world, and part the weird love-hate relationship they seem to have with their colonial progenitors. I'd like to hear a more definite answer, though.
Well, from a cousin of mine - raised in WA her whole life - who moved to England and married an Englishman before moving home, her fascination was just with the culture of her birthplace. She just wanted to see and live a little of what her parents experienced, I guess because they'd moved to Australia in search of a better life, she was attempting to quantify that perceived interest.

Eh? I thought the Irish were supposed to be the ones who like to drink and fight and blow stuff up all the time? The only stereotypes I can think of for the Scotsish would be that they all wear kilts and play bagpipes. Oh, and they're cheap. and prone to fuck sheep lol no

Scotland absorbed all that other stuff. We got angry drunken brawling from the Irish and sheep fucking from the Welsh.

Well, from what I understand of the Irish, they're far merrier and jockular and prone to tell you a story over a pint rather than put a hole in your face. But then, I only have an entire generation of Irish family to account for my knowledge of their culture, so...
And so far as Scottish stereotypes, I never really cared to think what people think of our bagpipe-blowing, kilt-wearing, haggis-eating culture on a generalised, people here who know what I'm talking about so far are either Scottish, have lived there/had enough exposure to it or know enough about the culture from their ancestors.
Also, what Shevers said.

You might say I was in before Scots Taffer...

Well, my own Irish heritage to one side for a moment, I think perhaps you should try telling that to the
thousands of victims of Irish terrorism. I don't think you can generalise about whole nations like that to be honest.

Australians are far from perfect also...
