Problem is, once you get over the novelty of being on another planet, mars is probably really fucking boring to hang out on for the rest of your life.
I mean, there's a very low probability of busty aliens and/or decently fiesty space octopodes. If you're extremely lucky there might be something analogous to bacteria.

and what's the end going to be like for those who go? Imaging being 312 space years old, on mars, alone because your fellow volunteer astronauts have passed via horrific heart attacks, cancers, strange Mars-flu, what the hell would be going through your head? I would hope they at least pack a pistol as means of an alternative escape, though that may just end up with everyone prematurely dead after suffering from some kind of chaotic psycho-mind glitch caused by the radiation, home-sickness, and lack of normality on the skyless red rock. After reading what a simulated 4 month journey to mars can do to a crew of mixed nationality astronauts, maybe it would be best to supply the ship with cameras and sleepy gas? (

There is no death in the future, a malfunction in healing nanobots technology would heal your body ad infinitum making you technically, immortal, willing or not, you shall live until the sun blows mars away or a meteorite will blast you away.

What could be a good plot?

This. Maybe I should have said premise or idea, rather than plot though.

Don't worry, nicked, it was bleeding obvious.

I imagine finding a crew would be very hard. The only type of person to agree to a trip like this would be the type you don't want to have on board.

True!

Not sure. I can't imagine that such a program, if implemented, would be anything else than voluntary... You can't force people to go die in space.
I'm thinking Robinson's (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_trilogy) "Mars trilogy" scenario could be a realistic approach, send a scout first who'll check stuff out and come back, then send the real deal on a one-way trip.

.
Well, if you read the very first bullet point, it says 'Space program looking for volunteers'.

I was responding to Kolya.
