Dude, when language academics are saying that its the case its the motherfucking case. Unless you're a German language PhD these guys know more about your language than you do ffs. I'm not saying ALL frikking German cannot be used to make jokes, or even that ALL English jokes don't translate, but that there is a large swath of jokes in Enlgish that, by dint of the type of word play, cannot be translated into German and take the humour with them. I'm sure its the same the other way around and the same with other language relationships.
Get over it.
Also, my Roman/German Empire joke was a winner. You don't get it is all.

if you mean it was appropriate to the theme of this thread, then it certainly was a winner.

Yeah, but when
you're saying that language academics are saying its the case I can't help wondering if
they were just talking about, say,
puns, and you're personally claiming it extends much further than any actual language academic would claim.

To avoid being gassed

No chicken ever consciously crossed any road. Chickens are birds and have no concept of roads. Therefore the question for it's motivation is irrelevant.
Of course there may have been a cock on the other side. (Maybe it was called Subjective Effect?) But then the chicken still just tried to reach the cock and the road just happened to be in the way, without any intention on the chicken's side to cross it.

You know what's funny?
Not this thread.

kind of the point, I think. Renzatic's brilliant post exempt.
