Randomizing of numbers in Thief Deadly Shadows

I've noticed that the random function in the scripts doest not work properly: it keeps to produce precise alternated patterns of numbers instead of producing randon numbers starting from a seed.

I have created a global variable in the Thief3Editor\CONTENT\T3\Flags\Ints.txt file. To do so I have raised by 1 the second number in the file and added

Quote:

randomseed 0 10 0 -1

So the range of number available for randomseed is 0 to 10.

In order to test the random function I used the following two scripts:

CONDITIONS:
When map sim starts, either from travel, load, or launcher

ACTIONS:
Set [randomseed] to 3
Disable trigger script

2nd script:

CONDITIONS:
Fire this condition every [1] seconds of GAME time

ACTIONS:
Seed random stream [seed] with [randomseed]
Set [randomseed] to a random number from stream [seed] between [1] and [10]
Reset script conditions and actions

between [1] and [10] means that, at least virtually, we could have a range of numbers within 1 and 10. But 10 never appears... Anytime I start the test map I got a patterns of numbers insted of casual numbers between 1 and 10...

Is there someone who knows how to have a real random sequence of numbers between 1 and 10?

I am terribly late to the party, sorry, so maybe you already found an answer. I case not, what does the first ACTION in script #2 do? I've never seen this myself. Does it "charge" the stream with the integer=3 and select random numbers from that point? That would explain every result starting with 3. I had always though the randomizer would just pick a random integer in a given interval.

This doesn't happen. If you learn something about language programming you know that there must be always a charged seed in a random function. As you see (http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/cstdlib/rand/) here the random seed is initialized with a time function: srand (time(NULL));. Binding the pseudorandom numbers to the current time it's a good trick for having always real random numbers, since the seed is always changing. What I would need is a script action on the editor that returns the current time.

There is a GlobalInt for tracking the in-game time that the player needs. It can be used for an objective to finish the mission in a certain time. In order to work, the integer must be set to the maximum value at the start of the mission. This could be used to get at least some sort of random number at any point in the game. I couldn't find the exact name of it right now (because I'm at work, hehe) and don't know if the game triggers the count-down automatically, but I guess you can find out yourself.

I would try dif_timelimit -1 100 0 -1 since this is a difficulty-related integer (sta_ are statistical ints). Its default value is -1, so it doesn't apply usually, but can go from 0 to 100. If you set up a mission with a time limit, you should be able to see the remaining time in the objectives menu (although it's zero if you don't feed the integer before).

any second dif_timelimit is increasing by itself?

I though it would be the other way around. At the start of the map the integer is set to some high value and then it decreases (probably every second). However, with a maximum of 100 this doesn't look overly convincing I admit. :erg: I never used it myself, though. In any case, querying the statistic values (e. g. sta_timeelapsed) could work, too, since the game automatically keeps track of the time you've played a mission. This could work without setting it up first.
