I've been advocating for a buglunch unbanning for years. Yeah, he was belligerent to mods, but for me personally the crowd favourites RBJ and Para?noid inflicted way more psychic trauma on my poor green soul at the time.

I wish I were here during the TTLG salad days that buglunch was munching on.

Those were some wild days, and I had a lot of laughs lurking around the forums, but some that have been banned were causing some serious distress with people (scrolling on when you see stuff you don't like hadn't been invented yet).

I found CommChat to be inscrutable to me when I first got here, like stumbling into an IRC channel full of goofy mates you don't know and not knowing what they're talking about because of all the in-jokes and slang. That was also the heyday for sarcastic and ironic humor, and half the time I couldn't tell whether people were really being dicks to each other or whether it was tongue in cheek. I didn't spend much time in CommChat until around 5 years later I think.

Yep, CommChat was terrifying when I first joined in 2002. I browsed the forums for a couple of years before joining, and this was the first forum of any type I joined on the Internet. Even after joining I don't think I posted anything in CommChat for a while because it was intimidating to me.
I didn't make my first post until 8 months after joining and it wasn't in CommChat. Maybe it was just my first thread started. Not sure how to search for my very first post if it wasn't starting a thread first.

IIRC usually when someone was permabanned it's because they start harassing people individually through their DMs or something like that, where it's the right response. I think buglunch & sailor eagle & some others are in that camp. But sometimes they come back when they're older and it's fine.
The other thing is when somebody is prone to strong emotion and TTLG is part of what triggers them, so they have to step away, where it's the merciful thing, like June, para?noid, jtr7, etc.; but then it's a self-initiated break anyway.
And then there are people like the old guard at CommChat like RBJ, Scots, Stitch, GBM that just grow out of it, I think.
I never really felt that at home in CommChat under the old guard -- I could never get good enough zings in -- not that I feel all that more home here now XD compared to e.g. GenGaming, but now I don't care as much and post away anyway. Cheers to all of you/us who have stuck around. :)

Indeed my old chap! I came here after Looking Glass Studio closed in 2000, seeking more info. I found gold.

The answer is both. But whose tongue and which cheeks, we'll never know.

You were a steady figure when I first started posting in CommChat. I remember there were often three sub-threads going in every thread: a small group of people engaged in topical conversation, a few people openly feuding, and a third group snarkily making fun of it all.
