WTF? I have no idea what the hell anyone is saying. I read. A lot. This attention span shit does not apply to books surely. If it does then we are doomed. If applied to typing then then it's just stream of consciousness anyway. No need to apply wpm to that. But yeah, no idea.
Anywhoo, this is part of my costume should we be able to travel to Joeys costume party and this is also my granddaughter Aubrey and her friend who were caught by my Yorkie Jasper rolling my yard. Hey! Who is out there? Heads peak up from behind my work truck. Toilet paper blowing in the wind. Busted.

Naw, clip thinking doesn't apply to books, Tocky. Not for me, certainly. I still read at the speed of speech. Slurred speech at that. Leisurely, is what I call it. Don't want to risk mental injury.
Yorkies were bred to catch... nuisance creatures. On breed, Jasper! Go get 'em!

To be honest a lot of my reading is in the bathroom. A skeleton is in my hammock. Also there is this drink made of heated cider, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and oranges with Captain Morgan spiced run that is quite lovely.

238 WPM is for English, non-fiction. I don't think you can compare across languages because information density and ease of reading varies from language to language. English uses Latin script, which has a smaller alphabet than Cyrillic script. So if all else were equal, you'd expect Slavic languages to read slower but contain greater information density. I suppose we could prove or disprove that by looking at lengths of translated books, which I haven't done. Besides the alphabet, English is also a Germanic language, and I think the Germanic languages tend to be spoken more slowly than the Romance languages because of the greater use of stops, intonation, and emphasized syllables. But I don't know if that has any effect on reading speed.
I think the bigger factor is how focused we are on the subject matter. If it's something we want or need to learn about, we'll set aside distractions and pay attention. A lot of people who complain about clip thinking are blaming it for making people not take climate change seriously. But the problem with climate change is that everyone has already formed an opinion based on their political affiliation. Political polarization is undermining reason, that's the real problem today, not short attention spans.

This.
I can barely listen to a few seconds of T***p whining about losing but others can happily spend hours tracking his word-pachinko, in person.

I wonder how much polarization around the world is influenced by American society and its polarized netizens?
People who think society is evenly divisible between Fascists and Commies, and scream like raging maniacs all over the internet

I think you can blame a lot on the US media, which is no longer dominated by professional journalists. The media covers politics like a sporting event and exaggerates the amount of polarization out there by focusing on the fringes, because that's what draws the biggest audience. But it's not just coming from the US. The decline of professional journalism, the rise of YouTube shock jocks, and rampant propaganda is happening all over the world pretty much simultaneously, along with a tilt to the right.

I also think that T***p gave a sort of blanket permission for fascists to crawl out from under their rocks all over the globe. He proved the effectiveness of flooding the media-sphere with so many small lies, big lies and half-truths, that finding reality becomes tedious to the point of being fruitless. And trumpists know that stupid people are easy to manipulate which is why they hate effective, public education, post secondary education and expertise... sorry, I meant ELITES!!

Indeed. He made it okay to lie. It was always considered bad before to claim absolute falsehoods and do any underhanded thing to win. Now it feels par for a particular party. Like it's just what they do. Like there is no way back to sanity now so full speed ahead into conspiracy and anti science nuttery. It's amazing the degree of self denial one can do. I had no idea the lengths one could go to. Now I know ANTIFA and the FBI can foment insurrection in a Trump hat. Who knew? It wasn't Trumpers. It was those simply making Trumpers look bad. As bad as they are.
Speaking of self denial, I now understand a degree of self denial old people practice. I've seen my mother do it for over a decade. I ask how she is feeling and she says she is feeling fine. It's bullshit and I know it so I have to dig for some glimmer of truth. If she says she has back twinges that means her back feels as if it is breaking into but it's no different than any other day now. But I understand as it's something I also do now. I deny weird shit I've not experienced before to myself. Pains sometimes and sometimes other things. Talking to Josh at the antique store I was light headed. I gave no indication. I tried to ignore it. But I caught myself deciding where I would fall if it were something serious. I didn't want to damage any of his inventory.
I don't want to hear any of that go to the doctor crap. Next visit I may ask her about it but I don't want her to over react either so maybe not. If it is something serious then I'm cool with it. I understand my mother now. I see her denial from the other side. It's been a great life and if I can extend it then fine. If I can't then fine. It never was up to me when. I've talked to some here in PM's that have gone through shit you don't know anything about and I see the same acceptance. Maybe it's not denial. Maybe it's just looking the other way. "Look at the moon" is a phrase I heard someone I care about say multiple times. I think I understand what it means now.
But there is so much difference between "look at the moon" and don't pay attention to things that are going to hurt those who live after. Ignoring that is something I will never understand.
