That must have just been a huge amount of covering that they peeled off. It reminds me of this crappy asbestos based shingle siding material people were putting on old houses in the 1970s or so. They looked like shingles but were really heavy and not great because they would become brittle and fall off the sides of the houses. My neighbor's Victorian house growing up was covered with that asbestos material which was covering the original wood shingles and looks so much better now that it has all been removed.
