All I can say is that I love going to the farm and following the chickens around. Really fucking awesome animals if you ask me.
But if was to get a farm pet, I think I'd want a sheep. Have you ever buried your fingers into a sheep's wool? You can just squeeze your hands into it and it's soooo soft. <3 <3

I know, I'm picturing a Duracell strapped to a chicken's back like a jet pack, the chicken wearing a uniform with red crosses on it, with a beret tipped cockily (har har) to the side, brandishing a walkie talkie in one wing and an adorable MP5 in the other.

Chickens that are kept in (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_farm) battery farms (often called laying cages in the United States, apparently) that, before being killed by the farmer for not laying enough, are rescued by organisations and handed out to whoever wants some chickens (not to eat you sadists)

I've raised meat chickens before, layers, dual purpose, bought old layers from egg farmers (trim their nails, give them a little space and they're good to go again for quite some time), ducks, geese, turkeys, pigs, and rabbits. Your feed dealer will be able to tell you the best feed for what you have. Really, they want you to succeed because if you give up they lose a customer. One thing I may have missed being mentioned is oyster shell. A big bag lasts quite a while and the quality of eggshells is much stronger. You can bake all your old eggshells too and give it back to them crushed up. A small expense for a better quality product.

I love that movie. :)

So, as a result, we are thinking of raising five or six chickens (for our
Children to Learn from and to eat the eggs).
I can just see it all now...
A pristine morning dawns. Air cool and crisp. Pungent aroma of chicken dung clings in your nostrils while dispensing Blue Seal feed. One of your inquisitive children eager to learn blurts out the one question you hoped would never pass across their lips. "Daddy, which came first, the chicken or the egg?"
While you feverishly ponder an appropriate response, Road Island Red makes true to it's namesake and makes a rapid dash for freedom. Across the lawn, into the road, only to be hit by a car on the far side. Safe passage missed by only inches. The driver stops all apologetic, your kid is in tears.
Then
WHAM your struck with another serious issue while your swollen teary eyed child looks to you for inspiration and understanding in this moment of historical tragedy. The driver asks you, " Gee, what do you suppose made the chicken want to cross the road."
Your challenges await you.
I hope what was posted above in no way influences you in a negative manner. I wouldn't wish for you to have second thoughts and chicken out...
