for some reason I find it hard to get as personal a connection with them.
Oh I know, I feel the exact same way. I think the only Radiohead song that I really
get is Creep. What nerd who's ever experienced unrequited love doesn't, eh? Most of the other ones - if I can even make out what Yorke is singing - usually leave me dumbfounded. I like artists that are more upfont and not
too poetic. Tom Waits rather than Bob Dylan. Sage Francis rather than MF Doom. The Divine Comedy rather than Radiohead. Sure The Divine Comedy doesn't have the same musical inventiveness as Radiohead but most of that stuff that Radiohead supposedly does so great goes right over my head anyway. As you can probably guess, In Rainbows is my least fave* Radiohead album so far.
So, yeah, my two cents.
* I haven't listened to Pablo Honey, Amnesiac or Kid A(thoroughly), tho.

The new Spoon album gave me all of the above, minus the vinyl, for twelve bucks.
Boy howdee, I love the new Spoon album.

I'd say in many cases his lyrics are about creating a mood rather than telling a very obvious story, although lots of them do "make sense" in quite a straightforward way. Of course it's easier to churn out random stuff and label it as metaphor and imagery but when it works, it does work.
I also think that the power is in the combination. Take the words away from the music and in many cases, yes, it's rather poor poetry. But the way it fits and the way the words sound when sung, it all just hangs together rather nicely.

Have listened to one or two of the songs...found them rather obnoxious, but then I'm super-picky with music - I'll give the whole album a go before I make any preliminary judgements.

I don't think "super-picky" is the word you're looking for champ

What, the urge to throw out unwarranted insults and dig this forum even deeper into members-only territory? Yeah, there's a temptation to try and establish cred among the snarky elite, but I have neither the wit nor the conviction to be effectively mean to other forumites.
I like this place, and I'd be sad if it were ever to implode. It's hard to be upset by naivety when I am practically its living embodiment.
