Well, at least this helps explain my lukewarm reception to the band. I started off with Pablo Honey, probably for no better reason than it's the first CD I saw on a rack after my friend's recommendation of the band, and I made my judgment based just on that one CD, liking it but wondering what all the buzz was about.
So is there a semi-consensus that OK Computer, Kid A, and maybe Amnesiac are great albums to get into them? I'll try these.

One thing any radiohead thread should make clear is that there is no such thing as a consensus among fans on anything. polytourist actually had the gall to shit talk Hail to the Thief highlight "Backdrifts" just four posts up, ffs.
I recommend absorbing them in the order they came out. You've already started at the low point, nowhere to go from here but up.

Contrast that with Ok Computer/Kid A/Amnesiac where I HAD to listen over and over again.
See, I feel the opposite. OK/KidA/Am never really drew me in. I listen to them because I convince myself that they're fantastic albums (and there is certainly evidence), when in all honesty, they're merely
good albums to me. In Rainbows is their first release where I actually feel real desire to hear it again.
Oh and you're crazy, Backdrifts is awesome.

I think I'm going to start with The Bends and work my way through.
Anyway, on a related note to the album release, here's an (
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/radiohead_make_10_million_from_in_rainbows.html) article that purports the bands profits from
In Rainbows to be pretty huge - I wonder if this will act as a catalyst for massive change in the music industry. Other established bands might contemplate throwing off record companies and trying to go it alone for the direct profit route. I think that would be pretty awesome as it seems that the relationship between bands and their fans can often suffer at the hands of their labels in the middleman position.

See, and I think this allows me better understanding for why you (and others) like In Rainbows. In Rainbows is definitely more "Backdrifts" than say..."A Punchup at a Wedding". Meandering, directionless, a melody that is more tacked on to fit the words rather than being a seamless part of the music, the different parts being more "good things thrown together for the sake of putting them in there" rather than serving to make the song more complete...
However, comparing In Rainbows to "Backdrifts" isn't fair. I actually think In Rainbows is pretty good for the most part. At least it's listenable. "Backdrifts" is the ONE and only Radiohead song that I skip on a consistent basis. I find almost nothing appealing about it. Scratch that, there is one part where there's a sort of digital scratch groove as Thom sings "you fell into our arms, you fell into our -" (not the normal chorus) that actually gets me to bob my head a little, but it's over just as quickly as it starts and then it's back to the maddeningly un-grooving, whiney lameness. Seriously, that's the type of song that people who make fun of Radiohead think they always sound like.

One of the best written, more immediate tracks on the album. Everything rests on the brilliant vocal hook. You're insane.
See, demagogue?

I always liked the atmosphere created by the electronics.
Jackablade on 18/10/2007 at 03:40
I think as a song by itself 'Backdrifts' isn't fantastic, but when it comes in after 'Sail to the Moon' it gives off a great atmosphere. Plus Thom goes aw aw aww, so cool.

Backing up the love for Backdrifts here. And I thought I was the only one who liked it!
But having a whole album of it wouldn't be a good thing. In Rainbows still doesn't do it for me :(
Also did Stitch just imply there was anything at all wrong with The Bends just now? cause if he did he's gone plum loco.
