Fett, it's dark, you're tired, afraid and confused. Someone is blundering about your house in the dark. How much do you trust yourself in this situation?
Maybe you are going to shoot a murderous villian, or even a petty thief, but I can't help but think that you'd be far more likely to mistakenly but a bullet in your wife or children.
Personally, I'd be far more scared of that possibility then of some potential murderer. But maybe I've just lived a sheltered life ...
