Of course not. It's CommChat and I don't march in lockstep with the Approved Opinion.
Whatever helps you sleep at night.

No, what helps me sleep at night is imagining a Mack truck going over your legs.

Well I'm not sure if NV was aiming to outline all the likely scenarios or just some of them. I mean the list was missing "unarmed versus unarmed, intruder horribly injures homeowner" or "armed homeowner scares off intruder with gun". Not to say those particular scenarios over-ride the others of course.
Anyway it's hard not to sympathise with what Fett says.
I got a bit lost in the "are we being racist about Mexicans" bit but Dethtoll picked his battle poorly.

This seems strange from someone who plays Thief.
Of course I'm not saying that breaking into people's houses and stealing their stuff is okay, but your "shoot to kill first and ask questions later" attitude is certainly far worse.

He raises some valid points but it's hard to sympathise with him with all that aggression.

Maybe. I guess if you get the jump on the criminal he should be challenged, not shot. But what if he dives into the kids' bedroom or something? How much of a chance is he supposed to be given?

I should probably add that my theoretical situations loosely based around the idea of a robber and someone living on their own, I wasn't taking families and children into account there.
But shooting a stranger on sight without even challenging them?
There could even be (probably fairly unlikely) reasonable reasons for someone to be skulking around your home... maybe something like your daughter bringing home a boyfriend without you knowing about it.

Yes. I would shoot that motherfucker right between the eyes. My aggression is directly related to context. I wouldn't shoot a stranger who's yelling at me in Pizza Hut or on the street. But if someone is standing in my house when I know I locked the doors, especially if he's holding something that belongs to me, then yeah, I would end him without offering tea or conversation. The context is that he didn't get there by accident and his intentions are 99% likely to be bad. I don't want to get into a fight or debate with him -- he lost that privilege when he broke into my house with those bad (or at least vague) intentions. People who mean no harm ring the doorbell. If my kid has been out with friends, then obviously I'm going to take that into account before pulling the trigger. My argument here assumes that the home owner knows that the individual in no way belongs in their home.
I admit that part of my fear is perpetuated by news stories of housebreakers who held hostage and tortured people, and movies like The Strangers. But if killing an intruder could potentially save me that heartache, I would do it. The likelihood of such a thing ever happening to me is small. But the people I do know who keep firearms have the same mentality about such things.
I think also that part of the bewilderment directed toward Old and Cunning is because some of you assume that people are basically good, and can't imagine someone threatening you with death. I'm not talking about threatening to kick your ass outside of a club or shaking their fist at you from their car. If you've ever had a gun pointed at you and been told by that individual that they were going to kill you and your family, you would probably have a different perspective about home protection. Then again, I didn't buy a gun, I bought a dog. But it was a life-changing experience and I could have never predicted how radically it would change me.
Still and yet, I'm not averse to a ban on handguns and automatic weapons. I just sympathize with the (perceived) extreme view that a person might want one for self-defense.
