So... when you're poor and live among poor people you're okay... but if you live near rich people it makes you very very angry and you start murdering other poor people?

If we were really serious about protecting children from death by violence and accident, we'd be talking about a car ban, instead of a gun ban.
This is silly parallel and you really ought to drop it as it does your case no good. It might as well be argued that hospitals should be banned as they are an enourmous 'cause' of accidental death also.
It's perfectly reasonable to treat weapons differently to transportation regardless of whether both have similar sounding risks and responsibilities, and even if one has significantly more casualties. Cars are rarely concealed. They're also not often used to personally threaten or intimidate (Except in
Duel and
The Car and no, threatening or intimidating driving on the freeway doesn't count). They're also stringently controlled in ways few gun owners, I suspect, would be pleased to mirror. Guns also have acceleration several orders of magnitude higher than any car in existence
Comparison of casualties is statistical malarkey. Cars do hurt a lot of people (nowhere near as many as they used to, I hasten to point out, thanks to enormous legal intervention over many decades) but how often are cars
used and by how many people on a daily basis. Imagine for a moment if guns were used that often.

Gentlemen, as a woman living out in the sticks - and pretty darned close to the Mexican border, I would not live without a gun in the house. The very idea is ludicrous and if some bozos got together and outlawed guns, I would be forced to keep mine illegally. It would be suicide for the border bandits to become aware that absolutely no one on this side of the border is armed. We'd be sheep to the slaughter.
By any chance were you involved in writing W's speechwriting when he was trying to stall withdrawing from Iraq? Because the logic is spookily similar, and similarly retarded. No, I don't live near a border full or crazed lunatics/murderers/zombies, but at the same time I'm not entirely sure why illegal immigrants would spend their first few hours in the "promised land" looting and raping rather than trying to fit in and find a low end job so they won't get arrested and deported immediately.
If nothing else your stalwart double posting should keep that nasty Mexican at bay!

actually okay, I've seen police sidearms. but never drawn.
I've seen police walking along with assault weapons, H&Ks and things like that, quite a bit. Less so now, obviously.

You can't compare the US and Mexico in that respect. You'd need to compare two countries with a fairly equal socioeconomic and geographic standing.
There is no comparison, and if you try to make one I'm going to go get my 30-06!

I think the conclusion of this thread is: guns are gay.
And gun-owners are radically gay.

I know you think you're being clever here, but the fact that you don't even seem to understand why this would be the case makes you look extremely foolish.

Border bandits? What exactly do you mean by that? I think it's quite reasonable for a woman living in a rough area in the US to own a small firearm for protection against petty criminals/potential rapists. Having said that, the weapon needs to actually be easy to retrieve in an emergency and I question the practicality when shit hits the fan. It also tends to astound me how much the average gun enthusiast seems to think they could stave off a band of organized criminals just by possessing a weapon. The tone of these comments certainly leans towards 'gangs' of criminals, as though your home has suddenly become a fortress of safety now that you own a sidearm. For all intents and purposes, if you were really in difficulty with a mexican drug gang all your gun ensures is that they will certainly kill you.
