I didn't try to research the area around the main path because of the same reasons. Assuming you find 5 artifacts of the same type; is it possible to make you totally immune to radiation in the game with artifacts?

Bjossi, I don't think so.
I'm now in the same area. At the beginning I thought it was going to be very hard, but it's not actually. I cleared all the map from monolith members without that much hardship, but with lots of qicksaves/quickloads :) Also, I thought Red Forest was going to be MUCH more dangerous, the things I encounterd there were just 2 snorks and ~10 zombies. I also saw a pack of dogs but then I just outflanked them and didn't encounter anymore further.
Did anyone find something interesting in the Red Forest? I myself didn't, except a few artifacts.
Sniper rifle or at least some rifle+scope is a must-have in the area, as well as good armour (green exposure suit of scientists or PSZ-9Md "Universal Defense", but NOT exoskeleton - it's low resistance against radiation or orange exposure suit - it's low resistance against bullets). Be ready to say goodbye to your costly nice suit after this operation though :)
PS: Also, I found that the soviet sniper rifle (don't remember its codename) is more effective than Vintar. The first is much more slower and louder, but kills with one shot more often than the latter.

Also, the bullet drop on the 7.62 sniper rifles is much less noticable, so its easier to get headshots at long range.

The difference is that ammo for the Dragunov is a lot more scarce, whereas ammo for the Vintar is plentiful. Also, the Vintar has an amazing rate of fire when compared to the Dragunov, and is a lot easier to handle, since it's also lighter.
242: I think you were extremely lucky if you never came across the 'ghost pseudodogs'. Like I said, they made it impossible for me to explore the Red Forest, and now I know that I wasn't the only one having problems with them.

I came across a LOT of various ghost things, not exactly in the Red Forest though, but later along the road to the Scorcher. I just didn't pay attention to them as they didn't harm me in any way simply disappering when they touched me.
Did you have scientist's 'anti-psychic' device with you? Or ghost pseudodogs somehow are special and do really harm even if you wear green exposure suit + the device?

I encountered just one near the beginning of the level, I didn't explore much yet though, if they are hiding far away from the main path.

*SPOILERS ahead*
The ghost pseudodogs are nothing like those other things we encounter on the road on our way to the scorcher. They look exactly like normal pseudodogs, except that they're white. They normally appear in packs of five or six, and when you shoot them they disappear, only to re-appear a few seconds later. Eventually you might end up 'really' killing one of them, but it's very hard to do it, and most likely by then you have been ripped apart by the other pseudodogs. Because they can hurt you just like a real pseudodog. We just call them 'ghosts' because they simply disappear in a white flash when they're shot at, only to reappear again, apparently unharmed.
And yes, I am wearing the psi protection device.

I never encountered any ghosts that could harm me, just the illusion ones.

The ghost psuedodogs in the red forest are different from the ghosts that run at you in the monolith base section of the red forest. The psuedodogs disappear when you shoot them but can hurt you and are pretty much always running at you if you stray off the road and can somehow climb ladders too.
Hmm, looks like I got ninja'd... twice.

If I'm gonna go check out the red forest in more detail than before, the scorcher better have taken those ghost pseudodogs away as I shut it off. :o
