Sounds like just what I need.
The only concern with this hypothetical is the fact that everyday people piss me off a lot, and the fact that some of the shit that pops into my head scares me. When push comes to shove, I'd liked to think I wouldn't be that stupid.

If someone feels the desperate need to place a smallish object into a difficult-to-hit target, they can take up darts. Or golf. And stress relief can be obtained in many other ways, although the other ways may not feel as "badass." It just seems to me that legitimizing playing with guns by having shooting ranges and calling it a sport or a hobby is an attempt to rationalize ownership of something a person DOESN'T NEED and SHOULDN'T HAVE.
And completely off-topic, isn't a flower in hell a female?

I've got a relative with property in a fairly wild part of the sierra nevada foothills. There are mountain lions all over the place. If you want I can give you their phone number so you can tell them how much they don't need their guns.

Most gun owners have no such excuse, and you know it.
edit:
And I didn't say that, AR Master. (How did penises get into this?? Pesky buggers get into EVERYTHING)
I'm saying a person's conscience should tell them that owning a fucking INSTRUMENT OF DEATH and calling it a "tool" or sports equipment is wrong. Morally wrong. Unless they have a reason, such as Starry's relative.

Well aside from obvious cases like that, who are you to tell someone who's worried about crime that they need a gun less than someone who's worried about mountain lions?
I mean I don't know where you live, but where I live it's safe enough that it'd be pretty arrogant for me to say that no one NEEDS a gun. I'd guess that for many people the peace of mind they might get from having a gun in the house is pretty valuable, whether or not they ever have to use it.
And beyond that, since when does "you don't need it" become a good justification for "you can't have it"? When it's dangerous? Is there a particular casualty number we have to reach? Cars can be instruments of death too; whether accidentally, negligently, or deliberately.

I really have no cognizant response to this. I'm laughing too hard.
That INSTRUMENT OF DEATH is a mechanical device composed of various metals and plastics, designed to use the pressure of a nitrocellulose-base low explosive to accelerate a small piece of metal at high velocities.
It is not a sentient, evil artifact created by the twisted necromancy of undead wizards and demon lords in the brimstone furnaces of Hell, that will cause death and despair wherever it resides.
Protip: A gun is an inanimate object!
Edit: The only things you NEED are food, water, oxygen, to keep within acceptable temperature ranges and sleep. Everything else is unnecessary; you wouldn't want to give up your toys, why should I?
Edit 2: Yes I am a girl. Yes I am a gun nerd. No I don't live in a trailer park. No I don't have a Southern accent, I actually have a California accent.

It just seems to me that having a gun in the house makes it more likely that you'll accidentally use it on an innocent person, your kids will get into it, or it will be taken away from you and used against you by the intruder than your scaring off a criminal with it. Having a gun in the house would scare me shitless. Everytime I turn around I hear about some poor kid who blew his younger brother's face off, despite training, warnings, and the parents having the thing locked up. I very rarely hear about crimes thwarted by homeowner guns.
I think it's a mistake. As for "who am I to tell people," I'm not TELLING anyone. I'm allowed to have an opinion.

If everyone was trained and the guns were locked up properly, the kids wouldn't have gotten to them. A properly locked-up gun has a trigger lock and is in a gun safe solid enough to defy a 12 year old.
Oh man I'm about to start defending the death penalty any minute now I can feel it.
