So we know whether you intended to reference/reply/quote the person above you or not, obviously.
Sometimes when people post without quoting someone, they are simply not quoting or replying to anyone, i.e. their post is standalone. If you quote people you intend to quote, and don't quote when you don't intend to quote, your intentions will be clear. You may think it should be clear by context, but I've seen too many posts where somebody gets their panties all twisted up because the next poster didn't quote and they just assumed the next post was in reply to them.

Isn't that their problem though? And if its a stand alone post who are they supposed to quote anyway?
