I already do smite people for that when I see it. And if I remember that I tend to smite people for that.
Feel free to use "quoting the entirety of an immediately previous comment" as a justification for reporting a post.

regardless of how big it is.
How veryveryveryvery annoying. I'll donate £50 to TTLG if I can be made Mod of Smiting Those Who Quote The Entire Post Above Theirs, and not just in title.
No lie.
All I ask is the ability to moderate those people's posts and smite them as they surely deserve with whatever tools a mod usually has. Damn I hate it. Can you tell?

I know, it's such a pain isn't it?
Sorry, I couldn't resist. I better hope your request isn't granted...

I got a crisp 50 right here guys. RIGHT HERE.

This practice provides a useful metric for gauging the quality of a forum, so the only thing that should impede it is community ostracization. Extra demerits for quoting huge images and adding something like "lol that's great."
Seriously though, is this behavior a holdover from chain emails or something? I feel like there must be a reason for its popularity other than stupidity.

^ totally agree :thumb:

I think some people are worried no one will know who they're talking to or what they're talking about unless they quote the entire block of text they're responding to.
It's goofy, but doesn't bother me much so long as they're not doing that horribly annoying thing Wormrat mentioned.

Seriously though, yeah it's annoying it's one of those things you have to live with I guess...
You'd have to be mod for
every forum to get to every post, I don't think they'd let you ;)
Quote Posted by Subjective Effect
Yeah, but I'd only get on the case of people who do that particular thing. No biggy. I only frequent a few sub-sections anyway.

It's also laziness and lack of understanding of the rules of communication. Most of them are responding to a specific sentence or paragraph, and don't know how to edit the quote to pinpoint the part they are referrencing.
Those few that are attempting to respond to an entire post by quoting haven't noticed how the regular attendees have edited when they post a quote and response.
But I think laziness and general lack of education is the true culprit.
Quote Posted by raph
Laziness especially, considering that to edit a post the
only thing you need to know (other than the relevant part of the post) is the location of the 'Del' key...

Clicking "multi" is fucking exhausting. I had two wisdom teeth removed today. It was a lot for me to manage.

As most posts I reply to are tech support questions, I slim down the quote so it keeps the other person focused etc.
But SE, you should know better that to rant out side the Thief forums as youll get the usual trolls performing their tired old routine on yer ;)

The last time I went into ThiefGen I saw the most horrendous vitriol thrown at a new poster that I've seen in some time, equalling anything I've seen in CommChat. I wouldn't hold it up as a bastion of taste and moderation, personally.

I would say that's an exception rather than the rule and with out seeing the thread in question I have no doubt that the vitriol perps were told to pipe down.
