Just some idle speculation...
Would it be possible to tweak the quote function to enable you to track back quotes to the original posts they were quoted from? Because, especially in long threads, there are occasional part-quotes of posts which don't actually mean much on their own, and as it stands you have to scroll back up to find the previous post to make sense of it. It'd be cool if you could just click on the quote to go instantly to the original post, and then back further still if there are quotes in that post.

The purpose of the quote function is to prevent users needing to do just that. The purpose of the quote function is to enable users to quote the part of the post they're referring to, so they can provide context for their comments.
If people can't quote properly and fail to do so, it sure as hell ain't the quote function's fault.
Just saying.

I know what you mean. IPB has such a feature, but vBulletin hasn't got it. Who knows tho, they've brought a lot of new features into vB 3.5. It might be up for a future version.
It could look something like this:
Quote Posted by Author
Some quoted text
[postid]1287060[/postid]
This could put a link to the original quoted post in the bottom of the quote.

What really annoys me is when you go to a forum and it's full of people who have quoted people who have quoted people who have quoted whoever posted about fifteen paragrahs to start with, and then they add something insightful like, "lol, yes" at the bottom. Then someone quotes them and adds "stfu n00b" after that.
argh!
