I just got a good used Geforce 6800 (vanilla) for $195 on eBay and I'm lovin' it now! I agree that the Radeon 9000 is a crap card, it scores worse than even Geforce 3 Ti500! Even if you just got an old Geforce 4 Ti4400 or 4600 you would see an improvement, and those go for around $50-70 on eBay. Or get a nice Radeon 9600XT or 9700Pro for around $120-140.
If you really want to jump all the way up, get a GeForce 6600 GT for around $200 or 6800 for around $220 (mine was a lucky good deal). (If it was me, I'd go for the 6800 for the extra $20, very much worth it)

I just don't know if I could recommend an ATI card right now, especially with the problems I've been having with my ATI 9700 Pro, but at least it doesn't crash all the time anymore.
P4 1.5GHz Dell
512MB RDRAM
128MB ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
64MB Turtle Beach SantaCruz sound
...and it runs like crap, no matter what I've tried. Around <15fps in a test mission with a dozen rooms or less, and no AI in it. The game ran OK with ALL the graphics settings turned way down, but still topped out near 30fps.

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2500+

GPU: nVidia FX5900 128MB
Sound: Soundblaster Audigy 2
That'll happily play at 1280x1024 at 30-35FPS with everything cranked up, bloom on and John P's textures installed.
Either I've been doing something wrong, or you're just joking. I've got something fairly close to that, and at 1280x1024, it would be cruising along at a swift 10FPS.

P4 2.4ghz
512mb pc3200
GeForce 3 Ti 200
onboard AC'97 audio :( (its ok but I want proper audio)
all in all I'd say I get between 7 and 25 Fps at 800x600 with everything turned up.(playable in my book but not in everyones)
Ofcourse I too am looking at the 6600gt.

Athlon XP 1700+
Soundblaster Live
512 megs PC4000 DDR
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128 Meg
At 1024x768, bloom on, all details set to their highest, I usually average anywhere between 25-45 FPS ingame.

Pentium 4 2.4Ghz
1GB ram
Windows 2000 Pro
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
Nvidia FX5900XT
1024x768 32 bit with bloom disabled. (bloom hardly makes a difference, but I don't like the look of it)
The lowest I get in the slowest parts of the original missions is about 20 - 25fps...some areas go much faster, often as high as 50fps.

On my second PC,
PIII 866Mhz :cheeky:
384 Mb RAM 133Mhz (Non-DDR!)
Radeon 9550 noname 128Mb
SB 128 PCI :cheeky:
Game runs OK, even with all John P.'s packs installed, believe it or not.
800x600 (old monitor can't display 1024x768 with 85Hz), medium settings, also settings don't impact game speed much. In a city there was couple of places where things slowed down to a less than 10fps, but generally you can play and forget about problems.
Not so surprising considering processing power of Xbox is lower...

Primary:
2500+
1GB PC2700
Radeon 9800 Pro @ 415/350
WD Raptor (10K RPM/SATA 150)
For the most part it runs great at 1280x1024 with everything turned up and John P's Texture pack installed (all options). There are instances where framerates start to get nasty (like down to 10 fps) but they are few and far between.
Secondary:
XP 2000+
512MB PC2700
Radeon 9700 non-Pro
Maxtor ATA133 40 GB HD
Same as above, only the resolution stays at 1024 x 768 because framerates at higher resolutions take a huge hit.
As far as recommending a new video card, I think it's pretty much guaranteed that ANYTHING is going to be better than a 9000. You might look into the GT6600, I think they are going for about $200 on Newegg now, or you could look for a comparable ATi card. I saw a 9800 Pro 128MB (256 bit, that's important btw) on sale there a few weeks ago for like $160, thought it was a pretty good price.

I'd probably be buying from within the UK (as I live there), mind you. I don't think the prices are that different on the whole, before tax that is.

The 6600GT's look promising but I can't say I'm entirely sure.
I highly recomend it! :thumb: I'm very happy with mine.
