Having only recently {approximatley 6 months or so} heard of mods, and having never actually installing one, I thought it would be best for me to ask: How do i install an oblivion mod? Do i just download it from the site and then it works just like that? Or is there a process of some form of file extraction and moving around files? Thanks in advance and my gratitude to whoever ansewers me this question.

Usually mods are already packaged correctly--you'll need to unzip it to your Data folder (though some mods are strangely packaged. Just make sure the .esp goes into the Data folder and any other accompanying folders go there, too.)
After installing the mod, you'll have to activate it when you first run Oblivion. Instead of pressing 'Play' when you start up the game, press 'Data Files' and check the correct plugin.

Gotcha, thanks.

Almost every mod includes a "Read me" file, which includes instructions telling you how to install it. As if installing mods wasn't brain-numbingly simple.

If all readme files were tytled "dont_open!" files - then, I guess, we would get short of a few threads :)

You're right. From now on the Read Me files for my mods will all be titled "secret porn list" or something.

Ok, so I installed a mod, saved it onto my desktop.......extracted the files.....ok, but, er, I'm not really sure what to do now with it.......will it just work on its own now? do I need to fiddle with it or something?

Thats the thing....I did check the data files, and I only see the oblivion masterfile....

Did the .esp portion of the mod definitely go into the Data folder of your Oblivion installation?
