So, again, if I happen to be looking at a ledge and try to swoop I'll mantle instead?
Again, if you point the swoop away from the ledge, you'll swoop. If you're looking at the ledge and standing still/moving towards it, you'll climb it.
Looking at the ledge, not looking at the wall below the ledge. Combine that with the fact you have to have Garrett within reach of the ledge.

That's pretty poor.

And your expectation is what? To swoop forward a foot and a half into the wall you're standing next to and facing like a total clod?

What if I want to swoop sideways, like an idiot?

You mean by pointing the swoop away from the ledge, like I told you twice? You do understand which direction "forward" is, right?

In the first 2 games (I didn't get to grips with TDS) after I played a few times, probably more or less as intended, I wanted to experiment or do silly things. That's part of why they are enduring for me, why I could play them many times in different ways. If I wanted to jump in puddles, I could. It seems that for this, I'd just get wetter than I wanted.
So, lack of being able to jump rather than swoop when and where I want, which is what this sounds like, is a big deal for me. Not necessarily for the first time of playing because I would be more interested in achieving my objectives, but for subsequent plays when you really want to see where you can go and what you can do and just want to mess around trying things.

There's probably something to be said for developing game engines and in game systems that fail gracefully when the player pushes at the boundaries - vs engines and systems that fail miserably and need invisible walls and other arbitrary constraints to keep us locked up in the play pen.

I'm taking time away from my school work to clarify the system. If you're not going to take the time to read and understand my post the first time in an attempt to find a fault in the system, I'm not going to bother with being polite. And you do have some gall calling me a dick after your snotty "I expect an infraction" post over on the Eidos board.
Now, to quote myself for the last time:

Hopefully you got it that time, because I'm not going to explain it again. If you can't figure it out from that, try drawing a diagram on a bar napkin until you have a Eureka moment.
