They should just go all-in and replace all buttons with a single context-sensitive ACTION button. Empty space in front of you? Swoop! A gap? Jump! A guard with his back to you? Blackjack! A guard facing you? Sword! A locked door? Lockpick!
Only this way will Garrett the daring be able to rescue Princess Daphne from the clutches of the evil dragon.

Errr, that IS pretty much what we've got.
ZylonBane on 20/8/2013 at 13:50
No it isn't. As far as we know combat and frobbing still have their own dedicated buttons. Unless there's a preview somewhere you'd like to point out?

Apparently you can swoop any direction, and even change direction mid-swoop.
Yes, I should have said "direction that you choose".

What we've got is a small step in that direction, sure, but only a baby step compared to what ZB was mocking. A jump over flat ground and a swoop aren't
that different (the biggest difference being that swoop is more powerful), and thief has always determined whether you jump or climb, albeit not like this.
Probably the biggest difference is the possibility that if EM screws it up there might be lots of places over uneven ground where you'd want to jump but EM won't let you. At this stage, though, we don't know whether EM have screwed it up or not.
EM have certainly put themselves in a position where they have to implement some (tricky?) things well just to implement the sort of seamless movement that gamers have enjoyed for decades, though.

Question # 134 re: contextual jumping and mantling. Are you inbred or just stupid?
Question # 135 re: contextual jumping and mantling. Have you sustained a head injury at some point during development?
Question # 136 re: contextual jumping and mantling. Did your mothers drop you on your head?
Question # 137 re: contextual jumping and mantling. Did she smoke crack while you where in the womb?
Question # 138 re: contextual jumping and mantling. Were there lead pipes in the home you grew up in?
Question # 139 re: contextual jumping and mantling. Have you ever played a video game ever before, just maybe once in your whole entire life?
Question # 140 re: contextual jumping and mantling. Have you ever heard of Thief? Google it. You know how to use Google right?
You should probably take a break from posting for a while because you're obviously taking news about a videogame far too personally and as a moderator this looks really silly. I know this forum is full of over reactions and chicken littles running around saying the sky is falling but if the moderators are going to start posting that silly garbage too then what is the point of even reading any of it.

Because it doesn't look stupid for a moderator of one of Thief's biggest communities to go completely batshit about a feature of the new game and start complaining about it in multiple threads asking beyond stupid passive aggressive insult questions including one directly asking questions to a member of the development team who already knows he's in for a beating just showing up to speak to people who have already turned on the game without playing the finished product. I'm not even defending the developers or the game - this kind of shit just looks embarrassing to everyone involved and makes us all look bad.
So I suppose yes, he we go again.
Renault on 20/8/2013 at 22:22
That's Fett - he's emotional, and he's vested in this community. He created T2X for crying out loud, so I think he's entitled. He's upset because the people designing New Thief obviously don't care that much about maintaining the legacy of the original games. Most people here feel the same way.
And really, who cares if it makes us look bad or is embarrassing? EM has demonstrated that they don't care what we think anyway. They're never going to listen to the community whether we're crazed lunatics or perfectly sane and professional commentators. They're interested in one thing - selling as many copies of New Thief as possible.
And...I can't speak for anyone else here, but...I'd much rather listen to Fett rant and rave than listen to someone repeatedly tell me to:
1. Calm down
2. Stop overreacting
3. Tell me "it's just a game"
4. Stop running around with my hands up in the air/like Chicken Little.
5. Stop screaming bloody murder
Etc Etc, Ad Nauseum. Who needs that kind of condescending BS?
Chade on 20/8/2013 at 22:29
I didn't realize we revoked Fett's permission to act like a human being when we made him a moderator. I don't believe we've ever made much of a habit of doing that on TTLG.
Has he abused his moderator powers? Has he censored b1skit's posts? No? Then don't bring it up.
(I'd say the same thing about some of b1skit's more emotional posts too, btw ... professionalism be damned.)

that different
They are completely different and your failure to see this tells us volumes about you.
This goes one of two ways:
1. You will fail to think about it and you will ask me how they are so different. I will explain and in doing so will detail exactly what I think of you and your failure to get it. You will be upset and will complain in thread and possibly to the moderators. But in your heart you will know what I have said to be true.
2. You will think about it and realise that are wrong. However, you will be unable to admit it and argue. I will detail exactly what I think of you and your failure to get it. You will be upset and will complain in thread and possibly to the moderators. But in your heart you will know what I have said to be true.
3. You will think about it and realise that are wrong and concede this fact.
There are 3 potential futures, only you can determine it. My money is on number 1, the darkest timeline, at 50% probability and number 2 at 45% probability.
Make a selection.
