PS. Subject Effect's thread regarding contextual jumping, leaning, swooping and mantling has been closed "pending review". That's odd!
I think that's just because some people from the rpgcodex forums were doing some major league trolling. The mods are probably trying to sort that out.

Yeah, the last 2 pages degenerated into flaming.

Yes, that's a valid point. As you noted, TDM tries to address this by splitting the two actions to two separate keys (while still allowing you to use jump if you prefer). T4 compounds the problem by adding a third action to the same key.
Well yes, but don't you know it's illegal for a AAA studio to increase the number of keys in a game. The coalition for one-handed people accuses you of discrimination, and you know what sort of support they enjoy amoung rash young men and politicians, it all gets rather horrid.

It's quite possible that the contextual movement is so well done that it will barely be noticed. I have a hard time believing this, however, since even one of the EM mods (Jerion) who played the game brought it up as something he hoped would change.

I'd say "well done" contextual movement would end up being identical to free form movement anyways. You're right, why call it contextual if nobody can tell the difference? People have noticed, and they're pissed.
It will always be noticed no matter how it's implemented: you press jump and swoop instead, not the sort of thing that slides under your radar. At least some people who have played the game did notice, and those that talked about it did wish jumping wasn't contextual, but there's a world of difference between the statements made by those people and the speculation coming from everyone else.
So given the E3 reaction, I'm not too worried that it's going to completely spoil the game all by itself. That seems like pretty far-fetched speculation at this point in time. It's clear that your average half an hour with this game doing average gameplay with average climbing around will not be too badly affected by contextual jumping. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if it's annoying a couple of times an hour or so, depending on playstyle, or if it's annoying when you start wanting to "push the boundaries" of the game, like many people have done with earlier thief games.
What
does worry me, quite a lot more then the contextual jumping itself, is what thought process lead to implementing contextual jump in the first place? At some point in time, someone at EM sat down and said, "hey guys, contextual jumping is so much better then normal jumping that it's completely worth throwing out two decades of gaming tradition and spending lots of time implementing this thing just to get contextual jumping in our game". And then most everyone else who matters must have agreed. I would love to know what it is about contextual jumping that EM thinks is worth this kind of effort. It's hard to believe it's something I'd agree with.

Agree with pretty much all of that. For me, the lack of free leaning is far more annoying.
I'd like to hear an honest reason for the change as well. My hunch is that they needed an extra button for Focus.

Thread isnt locked anymore, but Viktoria sure is earning her keep by removing posts left and right. What a joke this whole thing has become.

For some strange reason I read the whole of that thread today which is why I can probably see damn all now. Quite illuminating.

I just visited that thread myself. Wow.

I also think it is absolutely hilarious that Subjective Effect obviously hit such a nerve, that b1skit had to ruin the thread by using his Mod powers to plaster his own thoughts directly into Subjectives very first post! Worried much?!?!
Unreal.
:cheeky:
