EDIT: And I should say, I would still call 500k a hit back in 1998.
A moderate hit, sure, not a massive one that EM and Squeenix seem to be hoping New Thief will be.
It wasn't back in 1998, though, it was by 2000 May.

Had edited this in to my previous post, but decided to put in a new post after you replied to that ...
Responding to your edit about dark souls. Yeah, I just think we have different cutoffs for AAA.
The tomb raider comparison has been mentioned a few times in this board, and I think it's off. AFAIK, Tomb Raider was very successful by any measure other then Square's ridiculous forecasts. Square did the same thing to Hitman Absolution and Sleeping Dogs. I don't know of any reason to suggest that the games actually made a loss. All you can confidently say about this is that Square made some dumb predictions.

I don't want to be associated with jtr, Vae or Goldmoon and their verbose ranting, thanks. That's all.
The *only* reason I havent reduced you to a smoldering cinder is because you remind me of my older brother and the way he talks to me.

Hence "failure". Anything that doesn't bring in umpteen million dollars is a "failure" these days.

Eh, define failure.
In any case, I don't think you can extrapolate from this to the rest of the industry. If all AAA games sold like Tomb Raider, would the industry be in trouble? Not as far as I know ... but admittedly I don't have a clear view of how all the publishers are doing, so if you do, feel free to educate me ...

Not failure. "Failure".
Oh, and Dark Souls almost certainly didn't have an AAA budget. I'd be very surprised if it did.

I think we've ended up arguing about terminology ... *shrugs*

Hi Eidos Montreal,
You have ruined the Thief franchise.
Thought you should know that there are unhappy fans who have been waiting patiently and sorry to say, but you don’t understand why the game was good in the first place and so you have made a completely different type of game that bears little relation to the subtlety (on many levels) that the original had.
You get the feeling that although the team say they have played the original and stayed true to it's DNA, they haven't really understood what made the game appealing in the first place
OR if they have they have wilfully ignored it to appeal to more mainstream players.
That is the problem. The original game was the opposite of most games when it came out because it made you wait and time things before you could take action.
This required patience but it paid off.
They are eliminating this element to appeal to ''modern'' gamers. That is console /shoot-em-up gamers, who won't have the patience to play that style.
This essential attitude of sacrificing the original elements of the game that made it an Indie hit and not a mainstream one is why this development team have failed the franchise.
Its clear they aren't interested in really developing the franchise. They say re-imagining the world allows us to be creative.
You know what else allows you to be creative? Actually being creative and writing a sequel to the story.
The fact you call Thief 4 just Thief tells you they are ignoring the past. You probably think your game is superior because it has better graphics... meh..
Getting rid of the main actor as well is a pointless move that shows lack of interest in the fanbase and the game itself.
Not using Eric Ambrosius' music is another cardinal sin. Those two elements are integral to the feel of the game...
A real shame. I hoped after the Deadly Shadows debacle it would get back on track, but no, the worst thing that could have happened did.
I wonder if you even know who Benny is...?

"Indie" does not mean what you think it means. An indie (as in
independent) game is one NOT produced by a professional, publisher-backed game development studio. Thief was produced by a professional, publisher-backed game development studio. Therefore Thief was not an indie game.
