This is my first post in this forum, so hiya folks. I'm henke and I hang out mostly in CommChat and Gen.Gaming but I might be spending some time here too in the near future. :)
Anyways, I'm thinkin bout getting Morrowind for my X-Box and on the gameshelf in my local department store is Morrowind for 29Euro and Morrowind GOTY-edition(includes Bloodmoon and something else(Tribunal?)) for 49Euro. Which one of these do I want? And can you continue from Morrowind to either of the expansion packs with the same character?
I don't like most RPGs, but I liked KOTOR and Deus Ex1&2. Shenmue2 and Anachronox I tought were ok, but couldn't be bothered playing till the end of either. What's the combat like in Morrowind? And can you play music from the XBox HDD in the game(like I hear you can do in the PC version)?

Morrowind for Xbox? I hope you like to stare at the loading screen. The game plays out pretty nicely and the framerates are good but the initial starting load can take a minute or so. If you die or screwed or a quest up and wish to reload, be prepared to wait for a minute or so again. Other than that, the game is fine.
Oh and did I mention this is for the Morrowind game ALONE WITHOUT the expansions?
Combat is stat based.

A minute isn't so bad for the initial start-up. What about loading-zones? Like between the different parts of the map, are the any of those? And how long is the loadtime on those?
Stat-based? So, it's like in KOTOR/FF/Anachronox? Where the characters take turns in attacking?
SithLord2001 on 6/11/2004 at 15:43
I don't think you take turns in attacking (I haven't played Morrowind in a while and I mean a lloooooonnnnnggggg while) but judging by the games u mentioned I don't know if Morrowind will be something u wanna spend that much on. Morrowind is a long game with a lot of quests and is easy to lose the story (IMO) and the combat is pretty dull (again IMO) so consider wisely

When I say stat based, think Baldurs Gate or Neverwinter Nights.
Loadzones in between indoor and outdoor areas are fast.

Well combat isn't Morrowind's strong point. It is simple first person point and click, what damge you do is based on your weapon, how long you hold it back etc. There are alternative attacks however they are all the same with different damages and if you do on "always do best attack" in the options then you will only ever use one, there is no controlled blocking or anything. Magic isn't something you are likely to use in combat either.
However this is probably the most immersive RPG, everything is interactable and you can and will roam anywhere with 1000s of hours of gameplay. I have been playing for 2 years now, the longest I have ever played any other game is less than a month.

Get the Game-of-the-Year version. The expansions are fully integrated into the game, they're just more places to go and more things to do, but with a complete storyline and they're pretty good and as big as some games.
The combat is real time, not turnbased.

Actually NWN is a d20 based system (D&D rules)... Leveling is not done by experience point, but by using/training your skills.
Always go for the GoTY version.
Magic's not always useless in battle, it's just most don't have the patience to make good use of it or get to the point where it's more usefull (and a little cheese helps too).
Of the RPGs you mentioned Deus Ex would be the closest to Morrowind's style. Combat isn't as FPS as that game though, it's mostly stat based (with some luck, random rolls, etc).
I'm thinking a cross between GTA3, NWN, and DeusEx might be a good blend to compare it too.
The initial load is a bit long, and the longer you play (the more data on the save) the longer the load time is. It's not too bad, but it doesn't allow for the old quicksave-die-quickload-repeat that PC games generally permit. This only really becomes a problem if you are trying to do something that's way over your head or something that you don't want to fail at (such as enchanting somethig expensive yourself). In a way it's a driving force to do well and not fail ;)
I'd say get it, just don't hold me accountable if it's not your cup of tea.

You might not have enough time for Morrowind. It takes alot of patience because the world is huge and well... huge. It's very easy to get lost in, both in a good and bad way.
There's alot to explore if you are into that thing, lots of visual areas where you just stand and watch the clouds go by in awe. So much reading material to get lost in, and just a rich full lore-based world. But the bad is, it literally is easy to get lost and you don't move very quickly at the beginning of the game which either dampens you progress, or you skip most of the enjoyable strolls by taking silt-strider or teleportation transport.
Most of the combat is point and click, but you continue clicking. I know in the PC version you move the mouse and click around. Depending on your keyboard movement, it can change your move between slash, poke, and split in two. I recommend third person to watch the decent animations... otherwise the first person is somewhat boring.
Magic is fun, you can create new spells whether or not you have a previous spell you can work off of. The effects are pretty cool too... My favorite being the Dispell Area Blast Effect.
If your looking for action, Morrowind has a some. But its more of a big story to participate and play hero in. So if that isn't your cup of tea as madphilb puts it, then try renting it from Blockbuster or some similar place. Then buy it. Morrowind can be lots of fun, so I would say give it a try even if it isn't your type of game.
Oh and Get GOTY... it fixes alot of bugs that the original had.. plus Beth threw in the expansions for it too.

Thanks for the advice everyone. :)
Yeah, I think I'll get it(the GOTY edition). Like I said, I don't normal play many big RPGs(cept' for KOTOR/DX), but I recently "gained unemployment" so I have lots of time to bury myself in a gigantic game like this.
I'd still like to know what the "playing music from the XBox harddrive"-situation is tho.
edit: Hahahaaa oh yea I'm putting getting Morrowind on hold for a while. Just got my hands on Sudeki and Otogi for X-Box. Otogi is a hack'n'slash with light RPG-elements and Sudeki is a RPG with realy good combat. So, yea.
