Right now I have the Obokan and GP37, with plenty of ammo for both; I think that works nicely for every situation. I find the shotguns to be pretty much useless, at least the double-barrel one.

Anyone know a console command for getting ammo or grenades? It's extremely easy to get an infinite ammount of ammo for the pistol, but for the machine gun you only find a small clip every now and then and you waste that almost immediately in each fight. I'm in the first underground area now, attacked by 5 men at the same time and with just gun ammo left - not fun!
The gun hardly does any damage + the accuracy of the weapons is _shit_, so it takes like 60 bullets to kill one guy (since most bullets wont hit).
I guess i'll take a break until i can find a ammo cheat.
EDIT: lol... i killed them one by one using the knife instead, just walked straight at them and cut them, took a lot of health but at least they die quick once you get to them.
It would've been a much nicer game if they had tweaked the weapons imo, made them accurate at least. Since there is constant respawns the combat just gets extremely tedious after a while. I have nothing against hordes of enemies in a game like Serious Sam because the weapons are fun, have a good feel and you're never really out of ammo. Here the feel and accuracy of the weapons sucks so gameplay really suffers. I doubt i'll finish this game in its current state, perhaps sometime when i'm bored out of my mind hehe

You must be spraying bullets like mad if you need 60 bullets to kill an enemy. I always set my weapons to single fire mode, and aim for the head or torso area. It shouldn't take more than five hits to kill an enemy, at least in the stage of the game where you are now, where enemies don't have strong armour. And one head shot normally means an instant kill.
I really like how the accuracy of weapons is done in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.. It adds realism to the game, and I actually like to compensate for the wind and gravity effects on bullets. That's probably the reason why I stick to the Groza for most part of the game, instead of using a scoped rifle.
As for Shotguns, they can be very useful with dart ammo. Especially the Combat Chaser.

Well, you just are used to standard shooters it seems :)
You need to aim at the head and fire in really short bursts here. As for ammo, some sellers (like Kruglov or Petrenko) sell some rare types of it.

...means I have to scavenge everything.
Er... Scavenging for everything is kind of one of the main points of the game, you know. They even advertise it as one of the features on the game box. And even that is not truly neccessary in any great amount, because money is so plentiful and you can buy ammunition at affordable prices from various people in the game.

First off, patch the game up to 1.0004, that makes the respawning a bit more sane... ;) Secondly, most guns in the game are fairly accurately accurate (although I do think the Marked One is not particulary great at shooting things), you can't really expect to hit things 70m away with a pistol. The pistol becomes a useful gun at under ten meters. And also the Makarov genuinely is not a very good pistol, buying the Fort 12 pistol from Sidorovich is a good investment. Then just make like Chow Yun Fat and don't spare the ammo, it's plentiful everywhere. ;) 10-12 bullets per enemy is all right, because most enemies carry over 20 bullets for it.
And shotguns, especially the pump action ones, are great against the wildlife. They come close and move fast and are therefore difficult to hit if they get next to you, but they fall easily to a shotgun because you don't have to aim so perfectly with it in order to hit... ;)

Yeah at _very_ close range and while targets are not running around like mad it's not a problem to one hit them with the pistol (knife is till superior though since you dont even have to aim). At a constatly moving target while far away its almost impossible to hit with the pistol, realistic, but its not adding anything to the gameplay imo.
It's not like you have much time to aim either since you have to take cover, epecially when fighting 5 enemies at the same time. Wouldnt have mind this kind of realism in 1 vs 1 combat, but with all the respawns it's just too tedious, its a quicksave/quickload feast if you want to get anywhere and dont want to replay each fight 20 times :erg:
Talgor: i have 1.0004 + the bug fix mod posted in this thread. Wildlife has never been a problem for me, seems to be like a 5% chance that they'll attack (which i dont mind tbh). Thx for the hints :)

well, if u got that much troubles dispatching a few enemies I would suggest that you change the difficulty to easy because later in the game you will have to fight 2-digit-numbers of enemies per section, not per map :D
another note: since I ramped up difficulty from medium(stalker I think) to hardest (veteran or realistic) I actually use LESS ammo because hitting the head first time becomes a must. while I experimented on the easier level much more and did some shotgun-rushing, nowI become the one-shot-one-kill master.

This is true. Just shooting mindlessly towards enemies will put an end to a runthrough in this game very quickly. Find a good spot, wait for enemies to show their head, aim the crosshair there and fire a short burst. Either they die, get badly damaged or they are extremely lucky. I have never bought ammo in the game before and right now I got ~700 NATO rounds, immense amounts of other ammo in my box at Barkeep.

In that underground area there were at least 15 total so yeah i bet there will be even more later on :erg:
I might try it on easy instead of stalker, i totaly lack the patience to fight a pack of enemies for ages. I've played Armed Assualt (which is supposed to be realistic) but it never got on my nerves like this, perhaps i was just more prepeared that it would be realistic.

Not really, the enemies will get more healthy and carry bigger guns, but there are never too many guys attacking you at the same time. But if that does happen, in many cases there is cover you can use.
If you see a box, sandbags or anything that is sitting on the ground and is decently tall, use it as cover. If enemies fire at you from the front, they will never hit you. But if it does happen, maybe low crouch will help.
