I've been playing The Dark Mod for the first time recently, starting with the Thomas Porter campaign. Is there any way to carry over loot from one mission to the next? I'm not above using cheats to do so. I remember once in the original Thief, I messed up due to save scumming and had to restart and edit some .cfg or .txt or such file to purchase items from the shop; does any such thing exist for The Dark Mod? It just seems weird to not be able to use the gold you've looted to buy stuff and instead being limited to purchasing 2 or 3 items because of the levels being separate.

There may be some missions designed in such a way but if the specific missions are not designed like that, then it was intended by the mapper. Like the original Thief games, between missions the main character is using that loot for daily expenses, rent, etc. Time passes between missions.

When a mapper creates a campaign where one mission follows from another automatically, then the loot will usually carry over to the next mission's store, but not when they're stand-alone missions. I think New Horizon is also right in the sense that the standalone missions are usually designed not taking into account the previous mission loot, so the starting loot is probably already set with the challenge of the mission for the player in mind, without that bump. I mean that thought was put into the shop value that you get, and the resources you can find in the mission, etc., so you get the intended experience.
All of that said, since it is an open game, you can technically just "cheat" and modify the .map file directly to get what you want for anything, including this, and you could have a personal honor code to just give yourself only what they got from the last mission. Anyway to do that you'd change the mission .pk4 file into a .zip, open it, look in the map folder, open the .map file as a text doc, find "shop_gold_start", and change that to the value you want, save it, change it back to .pk4. Just in my personal case, I'll usually play a mission as it's made the first time, mostly as a kind of respect to the author to take it as they gave it, but then modify things just as experiments or to play around with it. But to each they're own; that's the beauty of a game you own.
As an aside, let me offer my sincere personal horror to both of you as a USAmerican by our administration's shameful treatment of Canada and Canadians recently. I don't know if you can call this a silver lining, but I don't think I've ever seen more outpouring of love for our Canadian friends & neighbors among sane Americans than recently, and that's the part that will last.

I think what the OP is looking for is something similar to editing the user.cfg file in Thief, where you can give yourself more money at the start of the mission ("cash_bonus X"). Even if it's not what the author had in mind, sounds like he's willing to bend a few rules.

Anyway I gave the instructions how to do it directly through the .map file in the part I put under the spoiler mask, technically cheating, but doing the job of a linked campaign.
(As far as I know the config or .ini files don't give that option, and I don't think you can set it through the console because it's probably a spawnarg you can't change after the level is loaded, so the .map file is the last stop.)

Yeah, the solution demagogue provided is pretty much what I was thinking of, thanks. I never considered that the mapmaker could have intended it that way, I just figured it was an unintended side effect of not having the missions linked. Anyway, I've actually not been finding the levels too challenging with the starting gold constraint so I'll probably continue playing without editing the maps, but it is nice to know whether it's possible to carry loot over to the next mission.
And not to de-rail the discussion too much, but, yeah, I've been seeing a lot of Americans saying similar things lately. It's always nice to see international support. TBF he's not exactly treating his own people any better; it's a sucky situation for everyone, IG.

Thank you demagogue. That is greatly appreciated. We had finally stabilized here in Canada after having runaway inflation in the recovery period of the pandemic. It has been pretty rough already. I have lost so much of my income to groceries going through the roof and just everything in general costing far too much. :( Now we are faced with it starting up all over again. My heart is broken. We know it is not our American friends. I simply cannot comprehend the absolute ruthlessness of President Trump. That being said, he lives outside of the reality of hardship. Should his financial fortunes ever turn, I hope it offers him reflection upon the suffering the citizens of both countries are about to be shouldered with.
