I tried it with Thief2 on my system (vista, amd 780G, Realtek ALC889A) using the default buffer settings.
It does enable 3d sound; however, there are problems...
You lose in game volume control (i could live with this)
The ambient backround sounds cut in and out during various sound events, seemingly at random and very often (this is extremely annoying)
I will fiddle around with some settings when I get a chance and see if I can improve the situation.

You can already get eax in thief with realtek - just that you keep having to turn hardware sound off and on (and eax maybe?) each time you start the game for some reason - it seems like it doesn't save the settings properly, so is this a problem with all cards?
What is this alchemy thing though? And i'm wondering if it would help the engine noises going all messed up in grand prix legends (they go all electronicy and garbled at about mid revs and higher). You can sort of fix this by disabling hardware support (or whatever it's called) by moving the slider to second from the left in the directx audio settings (run dxdiag) however instead of the electronicyness you just get some noise/interference instead. So erm yer :S
edit - oh sorry, is this only vista?

Have your tried placing both a3dapi.dll and a3d.dll into your main game directory? I've owned two cards that used the Creative X-Fi chipset, it wasn't a problem with either card.

Officially yes, but it works fine under XP too. Eg It's a necessary workaround to solve severe sound problems with playing FEAR under XP x64, with X-Fi hardware.

Excellent! I had the EAX disabled in Thief because my card is a Realtek HD. I'll definitely try this out. Thanks!

Er no? I don't appear to have an a3dapi.dll either
Also my sound is just onboard realtek - I thought they only did onboard sound. ALC850, AC87 (

Ah so only for creative then

hmm same as above.
I was thinking that maybe with a replacement dll or drivers or something that gpl would stop sound roboty hmm.

Download the DLL libraries off of web. Placing those into your main game directory is a current solution for getting hardware mixing + EAX going with the Dark Engine games.
The solution likely isn't mutually exclusive to Creative chipsets, give it a try. EDIT: (
http://ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117175&highlight=sensaura) It ain't.

This very laptop has Realtek HD. I have good 3D sound in my games (most games allow Hardware support and/or EAX), so if I do ever need something like this I'll use it, but for now it's fine.

It always worked in thief (though the a3d.dll suggested did make the eax much better - as before it always mad footsteps really quiet, yes).
However, when I start the game, I always have to go into options and then turn EAX off and then back on again for it to actually work within game. That is the problem I was talking about really and I don't know how it can be fixed :erg:
