So I was just picking out a random CD to listen to last night and I put on Queen Live At Wembley 1986. Initial thoughts were like "Oh yeah I remember this, cool" It wasn't until maybe the second song that it struck me. This was recorded
21 years ago Huh? I remember watching this on TV at the time. I remember videotaping it.
That was 21 years ago. WTF?
I remember in the 1980s that the 1960s seemed like a totally different era to me. Even in 1986 looking back to early 1970s music and shows like Deep Purple and Monty Python made me think , whoa this stuff is old! (but good) So the 1960s just seemed totally, er, far out man. Mop top popsters, James Bond, a decade where guys actually wore hats.:wot:
So I've reached the point where the '00s are to the 1980s what the 1980s were to the 1960s, if you get my meaning. So for anyone who wasn't around in the 1980s, do the 1980s seem like some far off era where people acted weirdly? :weird: Is there a big gap in culture since the 1980s? Am I just getting old? :cheeky:
I have not read the thread through, so pardon me, if the subject has changed to something completely different by now. Anyways, I am born in -90, so I guess I am in a nice spot to answer to you. I do think there's a big gap between culture in the 80's than past millenium. The first thing that pops on my mind is that the horrible cheesyness of the eighties has vanished somewhat. I see 80's as a period of absolute classics (in music) as well as the most horrible mistakes in fashion, music, movies and so on.
I think the biggest difference between now and 80's is that most stuff done now seems dumbed down and mild. Eighties was original. Oh and btw, you mentioned Queen at Wembley gig. Well, Muse are releasing a Wembley DVD before christmas, and the band has been praised for it's queen-like theatricality and grandeur. 80's is closer than it might seem. :)

Also if you guys like Queen (really like them) check out a band called Jellyfish, a mid-90's mishmash of Queen and the Beatles.

I'm born in 87. People my age (and people younger than me) seem to have developed this idea that the '80s were totally awesome and really cool. As far as I can tell, they were just kind of lame. Reagan + Synthesizer Music = fail. That said, putting a label on a decade is silly - there are good things and bad things in every decade, though I suppose each has its own zeitgeist.

I just watched Wargames last night and suddenly everything "totally awesome and really cool" about the 80s came flooding back to me. Nevermind how much the technology has changed, the movie is agelessly cool.
To be fair, it was followed by the Manhattan Project, a perfect example of the 80s taken too far ... the one about the shy blond guy that steals plutonium from John Lithgo and makes a homemade nuclear bomb for a science fair project for fun ... where Miranda from Sex and the City used the word "plutonium" in non-ironic romantic conversation, and Fraiser's dad was the general ordering people around. Geeky romance had its awkward day, but I think they'd disown it now. Or maybe only Matthew Broderick could get away with it still looking cool.

You're looking at the wrong part of the 80's. Rent Young Guns 1&2, The Lost Boys, and listen to some 80's music that had guitar in it. Also Traci Lord pron ftw.

My netflicks picks of late taste like the 80's.
The Gate
Less Than Zero
Strange Invaders
The Wild Life
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
and on and on....oh sweet sweet nostalgia. They are rarely as great as my memories of them, but they are sweet none the less.

I remember reading an article about hackers back in the 80s, which said that many of them despised the movie because it was unrealistic. I just envied the guy for all the cool stuff he had in his room :D

I'm forty, I hate 70s and 80s music, with few exceptions and even those are rare and a non commercial hit.
Well, there will always be something there to remind of you of it.
